Question What Animal is This?

We saw this animal 5-6 times on the route from Bageshwar to Binsar... Finally, saw another one lying dead on the road.!!

Please look at the attachment and let me know what is the exact species? Fox?

Looks like a jackal. Ever heard them sreaming and howling, like laughing? When I heard them for the first few times after sunset, I thought a band of drunkards were on their way home. They move in packs, and give each other their location by howling.

That's your Asiatic wild dog, which is endangered in India due to both habitat loss and wild driving. The latter does serve one scientific purpose, since the ranges of several species have been established by roadkills.

I reckon you do not find Dhule,s in this area. They are home mostly in Central and Southern India. I would rather stick to Fox.

We thought of these as the "Lomri", which should be Fox... but no one has been able to fully confirm what this is?

If my memory serves me well, we saw something exactly like this in Sariska in Rajasthan, but we ha no one to confirm with....

But then we saw something else on the same trip which was white in color and our guide called them Jackal, so again the confusion..!! Look at this video http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1337041/mating_calls_jackals_in_sarisk a_rajasthan/, this is what the guide called Jackal... So Jackals and the one in the picture I posted are different...

Please help me..!!

I've seen a documentary on Dhole's in Chattisgarh and they looked very different from what I have posted here...

These I believe are the most common sightings in the hills, and still there is confusion

Anybody, somebody ..!! Please help...

Hi Smakkar,

what you have in the vidoe looks more like a GIDDAR , a kind of Indian Jackal.

A frontal pic of live animal on all fours would have removed all confusion...

I still go with my first answer even after so many suggestions. Also, wild dogs are most likely to be close to habitation then other species.

Have you by any chance taken long positions in the market and are in negative. Combining this with market is understandable in that case..
