Weasel or cat or squirrel?

Please can anyone identify this little rascal? Taken at the Periyar Sanctuary, Thekkady, Kerala. Thanks.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet it was a Yellow Throated Martin.

Rascal?

Very respectable and polite, it looks, to me!

I think it might be a yellow-fronted squeasel cat.

Or perhaps the more common black one wearing a pullover. Was it cold, that day?

(love your flowers and creatures photos, by the way )

I immediately thought marten from the face ..... and from the coloring and description given for the Nilgiri Marten in my Indian wildlife book - appears to be just that. Quite rare - lucky you!

It is a Nilgiri Marten

Thanks to all of you for such quick responses. A special thanks to Peak for a correct identification. After checking your link Peak, I am convinced it is a yellow throated Nilgiri Marten, highly endangered, and we were indeed privileged to be treated to a spectacular show from him. [Thank you God]

I have seen Nilgiri martens before, scurrying across the road near the Upper Bhavani reservoir in the Nilgiris district, but they went across so fast that I do not recall anything about them other than they were cute.

I was desperate to find out who this cutie rascal was and now I have thanks to IM. Both my husband and I are so excited! Thanks a lot.

No point, ferret legging is unknown in India, presumbably because they would fall out of a lungi!
