India is the great Yin-Yang. Amazing lightness, equally amazing darkness. Wrapped up to make one complete whole.

Kiwirazz,

In my opinion, getting to Wyanad is easier by car.

It is abt 240 kms from Blr, then, why go all the way to calicut for that.

The route is Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Nagarhole - Kutta - Wyanad.

U can stay at a comfortable home stay at Kutta..in a coffee estate. they r nice people, and don't charge much. U must try.

I had put up a travelog on kutta..on IM, u must locate that and stay with them..they are called Chilligere estate...

It is mentioned under hotel listings also.

And, wyanad NP is 8 kms from Kutta..and Nagarhole is 20 kms from Kutta. U can also visit Tirunelli temple( 20 kms ) , irup falls ( 8 kms ) and can climb Bhrahmagiri peak ( 8 kms ).

Think abt it.

Hi Livin-in-India,

That would be kind of you to check out the bus situation from Mysore to Wayanad. I hope it 's not too chaotic.

Regards

This is the schedule as verbally shared with me by the station master. (He came running out to the enquiry desk when he saw me crack open my laptop). I assume it is relatively accurate.
This was some info livin-in-india sent via PM. I am going this weekend, so hopefully I end up there okay.

hmm, we went to wayanad before diwali. we had plans just for 1 afternoon and thought we would be back by nightfall. however, it rained heavily and so we were forced to stay overnight in the small town of meppadi (near kalpetta). yes, it was a beautiful place and the next day we did some exploring around chembra peak, a dam, tea gardens, ghat road, etc. just drive carefully coz the roads have very serpentine turns and i had an accident while coming back.

i have put pics of that place on this link. http://community.webshots.com/user/almoraboy7

if u interested, u can have a look

I think livin-in-india info is for the sulthan battery side of wayanad.

To get to Tholpetty from Mysore there is one direct bus at 3:15pm. Otherwise there are 3 buses to Mananthavady, supposed at 6am, 8am, 1pm. This was the infor relayed by enquiry at Mysore, but the next day I asked a different guy and the time were half hour later, ie 6:30, 8:30, 1:30. Anyway the 8:30 is a definite as thats the one I caught. From Manathavady you can catch local bus to Tholpetty which I believe is every half hour.

Had a great time on the weekend, but:
saw 3 elephants from the bus on the MM road (one ith huge tusks). Then had two game drives in Tholpetty and saw none on the first and only one on the second. Then the bus home saw another 2 elephants. Sheesh.

Comments book at Pachyderm Palace show that on occasions Tiger has also been spotted. Apparently summer is a much better time to go. Pachyderm Palace is great. Venu is really a great guy and cooks the most awesome food. I believe its the only guesthouse in Tholpetty and apparently the cops come around quite often, to check whether all the beer, etc has had its Keralan taxes paid. Apparently quite a few Bangalore honeymooners get in trouble for bringing their own booze over the border.

Anyway, I had a good weekend but obviously the gamedrives could have been better (but thats wildlife for you).

Update

Hi,

Could someone update the information on this thread, please?

I am planning on visiting Wayanad in a few weeks and would like to stay as close to wildlife as possible without throwing my limited budget away. Is there any cheap guesthouse (200-300 Rs. for a single) near the gates of the Tholpetty (I understand that's the best part to spot wildlife). Also, could somebody tell me about the opportunities of doing independent trekking in or around the park? I am traveling alone, so I was also wondering how easy it is to join a pre-existing group for the guided trek... And by the way, if any IM is planning to go to Wayanand the same dates (12,13 and 14 of September, approx.), maybe we can make a group!

Thanks a lot for your help

In tholpetty there is a forest guest house. have to contact the DFO to get the permission. Not so easy.
You can stay at thirunelly and go to tholpetty. Thirunelly is having a Government rest house. it is very cheap. less than 300 Rs per day.

Forest officials in tholpetty won't allow you to trek alone.
