Just wanting some logistical info on Wayanad. I'm only spending a weekend there. I have an overnight train booked and will arrive in Calicut on the SAturday morning. Spend Sat afternoon and Sunday morning in NP, then Sunday afternoon a bus to Mysore (and thn back to Bangalore).

LP says it has 2 parts, Muthanga and Tholpetty. Which part is preferable to seeing some wildlife (inc wild elephants)?

Is Kalpetta, Sultan Battery or Mananthavadi a preferable place to stay the night, and which has more frequent bus from Calicut and then to Mysore?

more questions later. thanks.

this is the park with the tree houses right ?
i think it all depends on current local conditions.
if somebody spots a tiger in Sultan Battery it becomes the main attraction for a week.
in any case, i'd get a tree house!!
have a great time!

I actually emailed Pachyderm palace a couple of hours ago.

There reply:
Our tariff is Rs.1500/- for the single occupancy. Morning & evening there are safaries inside the forest by jeep, for that you have to pay Rs.600/- but this you can share with other guests. From Calicut you take the bus to Manathavady and from there by jeep to Tholpetty. Our guest house is just opposite the wild life check post. Our care taker Mr.Venu will help you get a bus from there to Mysore.

The other place I emailed was Green Gates Hotel in Kalpetta, but I haven't a reply from them yet. It looks a rather swanky place, and might be a little pricey for me.

Kiwi razz: What's the email address you used for the Pachyderm Palace? I just sent them a note and it was undeliverable.

Hi all,

I have been investigating a route from Mysore to the Malabar Coast... opposite direction to Kiwi_razz's route.

The people who run Pachydern Palace have a website: http://www.indiatouristdesk.com They run tours from Ernakulam, and the Palace may be booked out when the tour groups arrive (Saturdays and Sundays, I think).

Regards

Does anyone know about buses from Mysore to/from Tholpetty. I looked at a better map yesterday (better than LP) and it looks like Tholpetty is equidistant from Mysore and Calicut.

I think I got the SL from Bangalore to Calicut because I supposed that Tholpetty was closer to Calicut. Might just cancel and go from Mysore instead.

Ho Kiwi_Razz,

I've had no luck with "authentic" bus timetables. I'm a bit confused crossing a state border... KSTRC buses... Is this Kerala State Traffic and Road Commission (or similar??) or Karnataka State???

In any event, I think the buses through the Wayanad my be private operators.

The nearest town to Tholpetty is Manathavadi. I have heard there is a bus leaving Mysore at 7:00 AM, which travels down the Manathavadi Road. (Three hours to Manathavadi?) There seems to be a world famous lodge on this road - Kabini Forest Lodge which was rated highly by a mag called Tattlers and is a former Maharajahs hunting lodge. An elephant-lover's paradise apparently, but beyond my budget.

My map (published 1975) has "Manantoddy" a little closer to Calicut than Mysore, but looking at the contours, it is probably takes less time to get to Mysore.

Keep in mind that I have never been to this part of the world and all corrections will be heartily welcomed.

Regards
