Tiger trail trek in Periyar

Hi!

I´m heading south to Kerala in the end of march and I´m planning to do some trekking in Periyar. Has anyone done the 2 days/3 nights trek (Tiger trail) in Periyar? Any other recomendations..?

well i spent 2 days in periyar<not overnight> and saw loads of animals on the midday boat and evan the evening boat
1/2 way into the park on yer left hand side<when u r walking in from front main gate> there was a trail off the side which is off limits anbd considered trekking which is a no no.
anyways i went 5 minutes off the paved road to this waterhole and just sat there 45 minutes

well i saw loads of animals including an elephant
when i was there a tigar hadn't been seen in 8 days but enjoy the beauty of it and don't let not seeing a tigar ruin your fun

u must go to munnar as well........enjoyed it most last year of all places
hampi a must as well but far north from there

hope this helps and feel free to p.m. me or check out my trtavels on this home page at lower right in the travel section

Looking for tigers?

We just returned from India, and spent three nights at a lovely hotel near the gates of Periyar National Park. We spent some time in the park, including the two hour double decker boat ride around the lake and a three hour morning trek. Cannot comment on a longer, overnight trek in the park: but what we did see was interesting to us. If your intention is to see a tiger, your chances may be slim....we heard from park staff there had been one tiger spotting in the past three months...nonetheless, we did see tiger tracks in the mud, which were just three days old. I have read many peoples comments on Periyar...but I happened to really like it and found it worthwhile to spend time there. We saw numerous wild elephants, bison, sambar, otters, boars, etc. The animals seemed "used" to the tour boats puttering around the lake, and otherwise showed no sign of disturbance by our presence. If you take the boat tour, go out on there last run of the day, around 4 pm, for best chances of seeing lots of animals. I got the best "bang for my buck" on this ride...a whole 100 rps!

I missed the boat! LOL. It was beautiful though. But I missed the boat, and they wouldn't let me on the other one. So I stood about by the lake, and met an old Indian scientist carrying an umbrella. Was something out of a British movie, it felt like!

But then went on a long trek through the forest with a guide. Sheesh, those leeches!

It was amazingly beautiful though. Amazing trees, and air. And fish, in the lake. And grasses. O and the animals! The hornbills were divine, and made the most awesome sound with their wings.

Periyar's nice but the only tigers you'll see are on the t-shirts
Nice elephants though and beautiful countryside

Hi Nemo,

Its a very good experience trekking in Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary, but don't expect tiger sighting. Due to the dence forest and evergreen forest, tiger sighting at Periyar is very very rare. I know these Tour India people personnaly; they provide good services.

Leeches? On your feet? (Reconsidering bringing only sandals...) How many leeches are we talking about here? TIA.

There were plenty of leeches! But maybe that's cos I went in the rainy season?

They will give you these cloth sock things, to wear over your shoes...

But every 5 mins or so we'd have to stop and pick all the leeches off ourselves with these, like, plastic stick things. I would recommend taking some salt!

Nemo,

I also was there in Periyar park three years ago, staying in Aranya Niwas inside the park. I've tried here and there to find tigers, but unfortunately as Brian says, the only track I found there was in the Ambassador tank after putting a tiger in.

It seems the best time to try is very early in the morning..., probably I was always late. In any case the place is fantastic and you 'll enjoy your time.

we spent a few nights outside of the park and did day trips inside with guides.
Here's a four day old tiger track. Apparently they do exist and are seen a few times a year by the park rangers.

Has anyone done the trek in Periyar yet?
Or stayed inside the park? e.g., any of these:
http://www.periyartigerreserve.org/html/wheretostay.htm
I'm going to contact them for details, but personal experiences would be helpful.

Edsita, how was your place outside the park? Price range?

want to see tiger

i am from kerala but
now i am in agra coming from Bhandvagrah
i seen 3 tigers in 3 days
they have excellent tracking system
and the park is small, 150 sq Km and 20 tigers -
the chances to see them in high if you r the one of the 10 so arrive in front of the gate at 5 am and wait one hour to open the gate at 6-15
the drivers are good .
you can approach the tigers in an elephant and if your lucky you will see one in road just crossing over your way .
