The Sunderbans in May?
I'm going to be in Kolkata in early May and was thinking of doing a trip to the Sunderbans. I've heard the best time to go is October to March, but wanted to know if anyone had experience during the heat of May.
From my understanding the park's still open, but is it worth going during that time?? I'm okay with not seeing tigers (I hear it's especially rare), but for the mangrove experience. Thanks ![]() |

May wil be hot , but wont be that much humid like
july & august, in May evening will be pleasant with occasional downpour in the evening. So overall may wont be a bad month to travel to Sundarban. |

Hi to all members here. I was planning a vacation to Sunderbans too but I was informed by a friend who stays in Kolkata that there have been several incidences of tigers encroaching in areas where people reside in Sunderbans. If this is the case then it can never be considered as a safe place to go. But I was so eager to finalize the trip I still wanted to confirm the same from you all. Please tell me do I carry on with my plan?

Look on the bright side..you might get to see a tiger
...something many people try and do and still don't... and given the state of their population in India it might be your last chanceQuote:

Sorry folks, May is not the right time to visit Sunderbans. During this time of the year, this area tends to have frequent nor-westers which are nothing but high wind (thunder)storms blowing from the north-west direction accompanied with heavy downpours. As Sunderban is vastly riverine area with mangrove forests (in fact, in some stretches u'll find only water all around and no sight of land for quite a long time), if a boat/launch capsizes, u'll be the food for crocodiles.
Tigers are there, yes, but the possibility of your finding any of them is remote. But despite everything, it's really a lovely place - but in winter, not May. In winter WB government runs conducted tours from Calcutta which is the best option. In may, try Shantiniketan along with Massanjore dam (if u can bear with the heat) or Murshidabad for some exclusive bengal experience. ![]() |
