If you are looking at wildlife sanctuaries in South India, the Bandipur WLS is one that i can suggest. It is within driving distance from Bangalore / Mysore and lies on the foothills of Ooty.

You have not mentioned when you intend visiting wildlife sanctuaries. I had a very good experience in the lesser known Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala. Although we did not get to see any tigers, we saw elephant, bison, crocodile, wild dogs, deer, langurs and a whole lot of birds. Besides tents and rooms near the Sanctuary headquarters, they also have places to stay in the middle of the jungle, including a remote cottage on Veetikuttu island, all of which are reasonably priced. Parambikulam is closed during the summer months due to the risk of forest fires.

Hi!
I will be in Kerala one of the first weeks of april. I really want to visit some wildlife sancturies because of my love for nature. I hope these sancturies aren't closed yet at that time of the year?? And does anyone know if you need to have a reservation before visiting?

S India sanctuaries are open all year.

Nagarhole usually gets the most raves. You can see tame elephants in Nagarhole for interacting, rides, etc. but you will almost certainly see wild ones there.

The Mudumalai elephant camp is fascinating. Bandipur and Mudumalai are really the same, as they share a common border.

Periyar is perhaps the most relaxing one, with a wide range of accommodation and boat rides.

The most overlooked one is tiny Ranganathittu in Srirangapatna, a lake with a zillion birds and crocs, but really not more than a half day worth of stuff to do. Still, when seeing the sight in Mysore area, there it is.

Wayanad Wildlife preserve was one of the highlights of my recent Kerala trip. Located in Northern Kerala on the Karnataka border in the Western Ghats, it is beautiful, non-touristy, and, you get to see plenty of wildlife. You can book stays in advance at http://www.indiatouristdesk.com/tholpetty.htm in Cochin. You can either book their packages, which include transportation to and from, or, manage your own transportation. I wouldn't hesitate returning there. You stay less than 100 meters from the entrance at a place called Pachyderm Palace. This houses up to 10 guests in basic rooms with hot running water and showers. A/C and fans. All meals are provided by a very good cook and wonderful guy. 3 safaris a day. Don't miss it.

Periyar at Thekkady in Kerala is one of the best for guaranteed wildlife sightings. You can stay within the sanctuary or outside at Kumily. Do take the 7am boat ride, and also a walk in the jungle with the tribal guide for optimal sightings.

Hello Praks
Did you go there via Top Slip / Anamalai from Pollachi? Any contacts for booking rooms / cottages? Thanks

Yes, I did go via Pollachi and Top Slip as that is the only approach road at present. It is best to hire your own vehicle and travel around in the sanctuary. Once there, they have several types of trips which one can opt for, but a stay at the Veetikunnu island is highly recommended. Try the given link for info. regarding the park and accom.

Thanks. Jagadeesan, the driver of the taxi from CJB whom I regularly use for our annual trips to the Nilgiris, has always recommended that we visit Top Slip and Parambikulam, so organising a vehicle is not a problem. Will check the link and try and combine this trip on our next visit that side.
