i think government guest house 'Sinh Sadan' is the best place to stay as its a nice decent place and economic too. You will have to get permits and book a 4-wheeler to enter the park. This can be done only in Sinh Sadan. You have got little wild-life museum and wildlife movie shows in there too. Its also situated at the very edge of the park. You can get double-bed rooms, dormitories and even camping facilities inside. I vaguely remember seeing some playing facilities for kids too.

Well,

I am obviously late (11th march) but in case you are looking for information, here it is. Sinh sadan in Gir gets some good reviews and is generally favored by visitors. It is located right at the entrance so it is very convenient and useful. I think it is a govt. guest house. Sinh Sadan Forest Lodge (Phone: 02877 285540)

Cheers,
Kartik

Good to know that you spotted 2 male lions. So let us know what were the tariffs for both the places you stayed & website links if any. How many safaris you took & what charges ? Did you spot any Leapords as I have heard that their visibility has increased a lot in Gir ? Thanks.

Hi ronak
didn't manage to spot any leopards. neither did i hear anything which supports your questions abt visibility.
Sinh Sadan has nice rooms for 500(non a/c) & 1500 (a/c), the rates are non-negotiable.
Rajshri has decent rooms for 350(non ac) & 800(a/c), the rates however are negotiable.
If you need info on routes, do let me knw.
Hope tht answers all ur queries.
cheers!!

Thanks Sushant for your reply. Last month I had been to a Travel Fair at Bandra Kurla Complex where I met the owner of Anil Farm House in Gir, he told me that Leopard visibility has improved a lot in Gir, of course not like Lion. He said 20 - 25 % chances of a Leopard sighting in a safari.

By the way how many safaris you took & what were the charges ? Is Rajshri near from the park gate ? The tariff sounds good.

don't stay in Junagadh whatever you do and especially dont believe the Lonely planet or rough guide about Hotel President being spotless. Its an absolute hole and clearly hasn't been cleaned in years. The worst place i've seen in # months travelling India. Sasan Gir has to be a better bet. We didn't see any lions and were too far away to make another trip. Shame. We didn't sleep at the president, we moved to a cheaper cleaner one, that was described in the book as having an owner who prided himself on tourist info, this was true. But the whole place was hideous, nothing going for it.

I took 3 safaris
the permit costs 400 RS, 700 for the vehicle & 50rs guide charge.
so it comes to around 1150 per trip
I was alone, hence finding someone to share a ride with was easy.
rajshri is right opposite sinh sadan, that is where wou get ur permit and vehicle!!

Thanks for the information. Safari charges are quite reasonable, certainly cheapest as compared to Bandhavgarh, Kanha or Ranthambore. If you have taken any pics of Rajshri do post it here. Consdering it's location right opposite Sinh Sadan & rates almost half as compared to Sinh Sadan, looks like a good value for money hotel to stay in Gir.

Hey Ronak, I heard the same thing about leopards. Though I have not been to Gir recently, It seems leopard sightings are much more frequent at Gir than other sanctuaries around the country. I have a field guide of Indian mammals, and according to that book, Gir is the best place to spot leopards in whole of India.

Thanks for that fact. Leopards sightings are very less if you compare that with tiger sightings. May be since the lower portion of the sancutaries (in general) are occupied by tigers Leopards prefer to stay on the higher areas of the park. May be they are more friendly with the lIons hence sighted more frequently in Gir.

Need to check this out by visiting Gir. Are you planning to visit Gir sometime soon ? My tour will be only possible next season.

Ronak.
