Indian Wildlife and National Parks - Looking for Lions in Sasan Gir or prowling for tigers in Corbett Tiger Reserve. Where do you go when nature calls?

Snakes, lizards, frogs and turtles?

Snakes, lizards, frogs and turtles?

Hello all -

I'll be traveling in India mid to late September. Its for business but I really hope to get away for a few days at least to spend looking for snakes, etc.

Here's where I have to be: Bangalore, Ludhiana (Punjab), Pune and Pantnagar. I could get a car to any area not more than 150 miles from any of those areas.

Can anyone help with weather and wildlife sites? Most interest would be snakes, but of course, I have aa list a mile long of species I would love to see

Welcome to IndiaMike

It's nice to see you post: most people only mention snakes in the context of 'how can I avoid'

South India Parks might be more September friendly for visitations than North India Parks ........... something to keep in mind depending upon your anticipated itinerary.

Is this because of teh monsoons in the north this time of year? I have read that some parks in the north are closed in Sept due to monsoons.

I figured I could head out from Bangalore before my "business trip" officially starts or wait and head out from the Delhi region after my trip is officially over.

Snakes

Suggest a Book on the Google, which has been extremely helpful , in our ER practise in the country side: SNAKES OF INDIA.
Also, visit:www.Flyingdoc.org
and check out the Photo gallery of KHAREL Hospital, both in video(Live patient with poisonous snake bite under treatment), and Gallery pics of 2005 and 2006.

If you can make it to Goa you will have a good chance to see some. At the moment with the monsoon there are lots around. Our record is three in one day.

You may also want to have a look at: India Nature Watch
Lots of members are from around Bangalore and they tend to be helpful so they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck and if you make it to Goa let me know and I will show you the places where there is a good chance of seeing snakes.

You won't have to look for them,

they'll find you

Just stay at any guesthouse in a room of Rs 100/night or less . . . a ground floor room with cracks under the door helps too. My room in Varanasi last time was an arachnid and reptile zoo . . . several species of each climbing the walls daily . . . and during monsoon, cobra was a real possibility. Forget those expensive parks, for Rs100 or less, they'll come to you
