Silent Valley - Kerala

I read this interesting article in today's newspaper. It is written by Gangadhar Menon, the person whose film was instrumental in preserving Silent Valley as a protected wildlife sanctuary, way back in 1984.

Thanks Snonymous for sharing this with us.

I first heard about the "Silent Valley when a naturalist at the Baghvan Safari Lodge in Pench was raving about it. I did not know about how it "came into existence" i.e. how it was saved.Must be a very special place. I certainly will go there one day.

It is a special place! Thanks for posting this article, now I understand the name "Silent Valley".

Somehow I feel everyone should visit a tropical rainforest once, it's such a stunning experience and helped me to become more aware of this treasure.

Another interesting article from The Frontline

Saw this today by Mr AJT Johnsingh, a reknowned wildlife and conservation enthusiast. The article describes his recent trek from Bangitappal in the Nilgiris through the Sispara Pass, down into the Silent Valley NP.

It is also known as the "Land of King Cobra" in India. The legendary serpent, the longest venomous snake (Ophiophagus hannah or King Cobra) in the world dwell in good numbers in this place. It is a very intelligent snake that seldom bites humans (in fact, it is very intelligent about where to use its venom)....however one drop of its venom can kill 150 human beings and even an elephant...it is the only snake in the world that builds its own nest.

see this video of King Cobra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7XY3dMVNhg

It can get upto 15-18 feet long.

It is not very easy to get permission to get into Silent Valley...even if you get, get a good guide.
