Hi,
I'm terrified of spiders and snakes, absolutely terrifed but I'm trekking up the Himalayas this July, any tips on prevention, any special nets to sleep in, absolutely anything, any pictures of deadly spiders/snakes which live in the north of India would be really appreciated!

Chownie,
I'm sure the snakes and spiders are even more scared of humans ;-) You forgot another sss word in that list that would worry me even more - scorpions. There are those too.

Thick boots are necessary as is a stick.
Don't sleep on the floor (why would you - thought I'd mention it anyway).
Check your (hotel) bed for "things" - not snakes - I mean other bugs. Under pillows, under the mattres and under covers. Of course thi sapplies to rural areas. The hotels in cities are okay.
Check the bathroom and any other sinks for creepy crawlies. Its pretty common for creatures to wander in through the drainage pipes - such as rats, bugs, snakes too because they chase the rats in the pipes, etc.
Don't wear your shoes, slippers, etc. (and socks - if you are repeating them without a wash) without giving them a firm bang on the ground to dislodge any creatures that may have made your shoe their sleeping bag.
Don't reach into dark spaces with bare hands. If you see piles of things that you need to move or investigate, use your stick first.
Mosquito nets protect from mossies of course.

India ia tropical country - there is no way to avoid creepy creatures.

Hey, a billion + people survive them...don't worry too much about things you can do nothing about. Always ask people if snakes and scorpions are around in your area and wear appropriate shoes. Most people spend their entire trip in India without seeing any of the ssssss creatures. The creepy crawlies don't exactly call on you every day ;>>>>>>

BTW, I heard of this 6'4 tall muscular guy who is scared to death of squirrels.....squirrels!

Learn to slide your feet when walking off the beaten track to try and make a noise and give all the creatures chance to get out of your way.
I did the mountains, deserts and beaches, the last two years completely barefoot, hot roads bothered me more than creatures, though one learnt to walk on shadows, It became second nature.
I have though been bitten by dogs on two seperate occasions in India, Once in Delhi, once in Pushkar, Now that was a bit worrying, though I trusted the locals who assured me that those particular dogs were'nt Rabid, They just did'nt like how I smelt !

We don't think viewing pics of North Indian spiders and snakes will necessarily be helpful! We can only assume that you are an avid hiker already if you are doing a trek in the Himalayas. Snakes will certainly stay out of your way. If you aren't lifting up rocks and looking under them and if you are in the habit of stepping widely over logs in your path, then you're probably doing all you need to do to avoid them. You really have NO control over these things you know, so this will be a good opportunity for you to practice letting go of your fears!
Reject violence.

S'hippy has said it to the point. Hot roads for his bare feet and dogs!! The creepy crawlies may be somewhat present in the plains. In the Himalayas above 10,000 feet they wont be such a bother !!

GO and ENJOY TREKKING !!!!
