Sasan GIr NP

Hi,
I'm going to Sasan Gir NP in a few days. Do You know any cheap accomodation near the park? I don't want to stay in the park, cause it's too expensive for me.
Do You think it's good time to see lions? How big chance I have? Do You have any information which part of the park I should choose? Should I take morning or afternoon safari?

Hello chwast,
we were in sasan gir in last week of dec 2006.

The best time to view lions would be in the morning. take the morning safari. You will need to go early in the morning around 5am to the tourist reception center where you will get the permit.

We stayed at a small guest house just off the main road after you enter sasan dont remember the name. it was run by a ex- forest ranger - a local and was resonable. They also would be able to provide you with all the necessary asst required incl. jeep & permit.

but then there are quite a few such guest houses on the main road opp the tourist reception center.

Hi,
we were last year in march in sasan Gir for three days and we found route 5 and 4 the best for lions. We had an extraordinary brilliant guide calles Ahmad who was a brilliant source of information and a good luck charm as well because we saw the ratel!
He told us that one of the best places to see lions is the little laggon behind the Sidi village and guees what- we saw mommy with a CUB and an aunt!
Btw. we stayed at Maneland Jungle Lodge whcih will be beyond your budget, but if you can manage pass by for a chai as the manager and the staff are more than lovely. The r4esort is something to see and we had a wonderful time there (we could hear a leopard ar night prowling around the resort)

Hi,
thank You for all information. I spent one day in the park and took two safari: route nr 2 and 4. Unfortunatelly I didn't see the lions but I was really lucky to see leopard! Big male came to the path just 5 meters in front of the jeep. It was amazing!
I stayed in small guest house and it was cheap and quiet all right.
I'm a little afraid about one thing. Everybody in the village proposed me illegal walks to the park. I met some foreigners who went to park that way. I think that all officials know about this and nobody cares. I heard about a lot opf problems in the parks in India, but I read that this one is best controlled and protected. It's bullshit...

Hi,
sorry for such a late answer. I stayed at Rajeshri Guest House. You don't need to book the room. The owner will find You as soon as You arrive to the village. He appeared in front of us just 5 minutes after we went out of the bus

. He is always in the centre of the village. We stayed in his house. He has a few simple but clean and cheap (250) rooms. It;s much better than staying in guest house by the main road. Rooms are ok, but I didn;t like the owner. You must be always careful about the rates, money, because he always wants to cheat You, so keep that in mind.
Besides he organizes illegal walks into the park and he proposes that at the beginning. He has friends, who works in the park, so he pays them some money, and it's possible. I hate this, but everybody knows about this, so what could I do? You just can not to go...

these illegal walks are very common my friend, my dad did this when he wanted to see lions up close lucky for him Gir lions are relatively "friendly" to humans though there was one incident a couple months back of lions breaking into a village hut and killing a woman.

Guys,

I'm at Rajkot presently and planning to go visit Sasan in another couple of days. I would like to enjoy the Gir forest - specifically nights in the forest. I'd love to see lions if luck permits but the whole idea is to enjoy the forest.

I've got limited budget and its just 2-4 friends of us are going to visit for a day and a night - anyone has got any idea about decent / cheap accomodation, please let me know.. I would probably just stay / roam whereever I'm to enjoy the forest and may not go for the NP to see those Lions in a big cage, I would rather love to go around the forest and see the real forest / lions.

need one clarification, this Rajeshri guest house you are talking about, is that in proper sasan village!! which village you are talking about!! I love staying in those rustic villages and culture there..

Cryptic answer (it's all from memory), but here goes.

When you arrive by bus (if you've travelled from the Diu side), alight at the set of shops in the main street. Walk to the side street (around 30 meters (?)) and turn left (you can only go left).

From there, walk down to the end of the street - my recollection is that it's a dead-end. There's a guest-house on the left hand side. The rates were around rp200 for a basic room with attached bathroom.

The owner of the GH can also arrange bookings for tours of the park.

As to whether to go in the morning or at afternoon, I met a Belgian guy who had gone on the afternoon run & enjoyed it but didn't see any wild cats.

We both went the next morning and we got to see a lion. I actually got out of the jeep to get closer for a photo session (click on the photo link & navigate to India to see it). In hindsight, a silly thing to do but I've got a good pic of the male staring at me intently.

Rajkot is my hometown, I'm visiting Rajkot for few days and want to visit Gir again before I leave for Bangalore.

I'm going to drive down from Rajkot > Junagadh > Sasan...
I've also heard about a hunting bungalow somewhere close to Sasan thats been converted to a GH. I shall check that option out as well. As far as I know this Bungalow belongs to a Royal family of Jetpur state, and it should be a good place to hang around if you really want to enjoy the forest..
So, now I have got 3 places to choose from,>> Rajeshree GH / Sinh Sadan / Bungalow converted to GH.. lets see which one turns out to be a good choice..

At a guess, anything that's located inside the forest will not be a cheap option for people who want to stay over.

I hope you have a great time there and get to see some form of wild cat (alive) and up close (without being in danger).

Would like to hear from you after you return to get some feedback on your time there.

Hey Zoltan,

I could not make it to Sasan this time. I arrived at Bangalore yesterday and now waiting for another opportunity to visit Sasan..
I beleive that this was the golden chance for me as it was proper summer time and I would have had more probabilities of sighiting wild animals and enjoying nights in jungle..

I hope I get sometime to visit Sasan next Summer and should be able to make use of your advice
