hi touring manali (what a name to use to address you, man)
a quick reply;
entry fees per vehicle, which allows upto 6 people - 600/-, which comes to rs.100 perperson.
private jeeps/gypsies charge about 600 to 800. you may need to wait for other people to fill up the space, if you are alone. so that would be about 100-150 per person.
amateur cameras and amateur CCD video cams - included in the above entry fees.
profesional cam rates are high.
the best (as in good n cheap) accomodation bet is forest departments 'sih sadan' (from where u collect the entry permissions). they have tents, non-AC and AC rooms.
non AC - 500/-
AC -1500/-

best time of going inside depends on why you are going in? want to see lion? enjoy the sanctuaries jungle?

lions don't have a preferred time of taking a walk. ^_^

but usually the forest guides that accompany you on the safari have information on sightings. if so, they will take you there.
treat them with respect. they are a lot who are very good at their work and unappreciated. money is the only thing people give them for all they give to people. makes them feel like whores and they don't enjoy feeling that way... but... atleast money keeps their stomachs full.

if you are a lover of the dark. or night, take the evening safari.
if u love the energy of the mornings, take the morning one.
don't go all worked up to see a lion - you will miss more beautiful things.
just go ready to soak in everything. birdlife is beautiful - the only problem is, they stay away (usually) from this too-beaten-path of jeep safaris. but you might just get lucky.
leopards are hard to sight. they love playing hard-to-get-and-see. but chasing them to have a glimpse has its own charm. monkey chatter will tell you if he is around.

see if u can convince the guide to take u to a 'nees' or 'nessdo' - maldhari settlement. it would be a good experience to take back with you.

after all this, can i get a little 'righteous'?
allow me the pleasure.
if you find anything wrong/bad/sloppy/indifferent-attitude-d... don't be quick to blame it on the forest dept.
rather, see if you can bring it to their notice as one more thing they can improve.
the department is generally good and cares genuinely.
and no... i am not from the department or related to anyone in forest dept.
have just seen them from close quarters. they bleed. they pain. they get frustarted. and they still keep trying.

enjoy Gir. romance it.

ciao.

Be aware that different entry prices apply to foreigners and that fees increase by 25% at the weekend. I was there last week and 4 of us (all foreign) paid RS 2750 for jeep, guide and permit. The park is beautiful. We didn't see any lions (though our guide tried very hard to find them and even left the trail to search for them) but we did see sambar and a blue bull.
