Ranthambore- How many safaris?

Will be there in December. Will be traveling from Jaipur by train, spending two nights and then leaving on evening train to Bhopal.

We can get there in time for afternoon safari the first day.

Is it too much to try to do safari first afternoon, morning and afternoon on the next day and morning on third day? Suggestions?

Will be staying at Khem Villas, they are suggesting booking through them or travel agent now. I hear the Rajasthan website should be uploading quota's for September soon, should I wait for December quotas and book myself or book through Khem Villas now.

Thanks

Sorry, I can't really help you here, I've no idea how regular tiger sightings are these days, it was a good 5 years ago when I visited. (seeing 4 tigers)

I done 3 safaris in 2 days, it was OK, I'm not really into all that safari nonsence, you know the "whisper only, the tiger might hear you" (as a truck load of tourists roar past clicking cameras), anyway, the reason I mention that is because, if someone like me doesn't think 3 safaris in 2 days is too much, then most people with much more interest than me, should really have as many safaris as they can.

Take warm clothes, it's bloody cold on those safaris, especially the morning ones.

I did all 8 safaris Monday-Thursday on one visit and left rather reluctantly the next morning on the early train to back to the Delhi-gulag for work commitments. If you're the outdoorsy type then this park should really turn your crank for the vistas, flora, fauna & avifauna. If you are lucky to spot a Tiger it's extra icing on an already, heavily frosted cake ..... I recommend you do all 4 safaris as planned.

Hello I recommend you to do 4 safaris as planned. You will need to have luck with the number of the road in the park. Some are better than other (n°3 first one last march...).

Yes, definately 4 safaris. If possible mix them up - 2 on the public "canter" vehicles (lots of noisy local tourists) and if your budget allows, do a couple by private jeep. Seeing tigers just a matter of good luck, definately the icing on the cake if you do - I know there has been much published about poching in Ranthambore over past few years. And lots of WARM CLOTHING necessary - take all your blankets from your hotel room - it is REALLY FREEZING in December mornings. But a very beautiful place.

Just take as many safaris as you can!! Each safari is 3 hours long and not at all exhausting.

The public area of the park is divided into 6 (or 7) zones that have dirt roads passing through. You can visit only one zone per safari and where you'll go is determined by a lucky draw. Pray for zone 3, since its the most beautiful part of the park with plenty of lakes and ruins - right out of Jungle Book. Even if you don't see tigers, you'll see plenty of birds and deer.

My group was particularly lucky when we went in March. We saw tigers on all 3 safaris, and the last one was a tiger feast in zone 3 where we saw FOUR tigers, walking all around us for the whole 3 hours!!

You can take a look at (just a few of) the pics here:

Hi Kapil
Just want to say you pics of Ranthambore are superb and evoked many memories of travelling through that beautiful national park - but how lucky you were to get so close to the awesome tigers. Really makes me distracted from my work to think that there are other possibilities out there, like travelling india in search of wildlife! Something we miss here in NZ.

Great shots. Cheers. Dil.

Sounds like we should book all four, can always not go to one if we feel like it (out the $$ though).

Any reason to do some of the safaris on the Canter, if we can afford the jeeps and they are available?

None - especially if it's jammed packed with families & their kids. The one time I did it some little kid screamed in my ear the whole afternoon. If I didn't think I'd have got eaten by a Tigger, I would have jumped out of that contraption & walked back to the guesthouse on my own time & power.
