Ranthambore Gypsies

I have planned for 2.5 days in Rhanthambore at the start of March.
I've now gone to the booking site and there are no gypsies available for any time over the 3 days i'm there.
I'm really annoyed at myself for not booking earlier, when I check just a week or so ago there were loads of places.
There are loads of canter spaces still available.
Is there anyway round this, could a hotel get me on one or should I just go ahead and book the canter.

Had me wondering. A Maruti Gypsy (SUV), one presumes? (Checking: I guess a canter might then be a Mitsubishi Fuso Canter = light truck?)

Either that, or a not-so-friendly way to refer to a porter, I guess Maybe the canter could then be construed to be a horse carriage (tonga)

I don't think the canters or the gypsies give you any hugely different experience, do they? (Willing to be enlightened if I am wrong.) When I was there they just followed each other around - there are set paths through the park that they take. The main difference I suppose is the number of people on board, but as the gypsy will be parked right by a canter at a stop, you will have just as many people close by to you.

Yep thats right

"Gypsy means a 6 seat petrol vehicle" - jeep
"Canter means a 20 seat diesel vehicle" - truck

well from what i read people said you mightn't have such a good view on the canters but maybe you're right. Might just go ahead and book the canter so, thanks guys.

Friends of mine have just been there and I think they were on the truck. I can't see any difference to your viewing between either - I would go on whatever vehicle is available. They saw tiger and various other animals, said it was very good.

You had me confused - I thought gypsies hired out horses for a canter.. Not until rest of posts came did I know what you were talking about!

I was in a canter on my trip - but unfortunately we didn't see any tigers, so it wouldn't have made a difference what vehicle we were in. Hopefully over 2.5 days you will have more luck. I'm sure your driver will try and make sure everyone gets a good look it you do come across a tiger or two.

I assume the Canter is more expensive than the Gypsy? If the fee is refundable, book the Canter and then seee if you can "downgrade" to a Gypsy on the day of the safari..
