I would not describe it as a huge success.

Successful, probably in the sense that if Project Tiger didn't exist, then the number of tigers now surviving, would be much less than the estimated 3500 - down from the 40,000 believed to exist 60 years ago. Recent figures suggest that if the annual rate of loss continues then the tiger could be extinct in India in 30-40 years.

Poaching continues to be the main threat and many poachers and forest guards have lost their lives in armed confrontations. The continual encroachment into parks by local villagers is also limiting the tiger's range.

Hi AnnaD

Billy Arjun Singh, now 87, was involved with Project Tiger in his earlier years and was responsible for setting up Dudhwa National Park

Another champion for the tiger, through his books and writings has been Valmik Thapar

Valmiki Thampar also has a great program on natgeo. It is called Land of the tiger....it comes on Saturday's at 9 pm, india time.
