Hi Avijit,

Unfortunately, I looks like, I would not be able to make it.
I will let you know beforehand if it is possible.

Spent 3 days in pench in April 2009. Stayed at the Pench Jungle Camp. It is easy to get to from Nagpur...about 1.5 hrs and the road is in good condition. The turn off from the main road towards Pench is being resurfaced in places...which is a good thing. The resort itself is very clean and with top quality acommodation....the fixtures and fittings are of international standard.

The Pench reserve is well managed. The game drives assemble at the gate at 5.45 am and the rangers/guards are assigned to each vehicle. all vehicles enter the reserve together and split up to different locatons to try and catch a glimpse of the tiger. sadly despite 4 attempts we did not see any tigers, mainly because i reckon they had to dart one of the cubs and take it to kanha by helicopter (some injury). The Pench river was dry and we made trips to the forest keepers watchtower and home (shares with wife and 2 kids). I asked him how he copes with living in the forest by himself..ie is he not terrified. he said that he was as terrified as anyone else but it is a job. Gave his lad a tin of chocolates which i am sure he will treasure.

saw loads of other animals like sambar, chital, neelgai, malabar hornbill, civet, boars, etc.

As this time of year there was no greenery, the sight of the white beech trees in the middle of the forest is eerie. a sight to behold

pench is a well kept and beautiful reserve. Enjoy it while it is still untouched by commercialisation and if you see a tiger you are lucky...if not as one chap sporting an IIT shirt said to me....'you are lucky you have not seen a tiger yet, it will motivate you to go to other parks to see one, i have seen a few now and my will to see another is fading'

wise words.

Thanks matt for the feedback.
About that IIT guy's statement, I believe, it's your passion towards wild life which keeps you attracting towards it. No matter how many times you get to see tiger or any animal.

How to reach Pench from Nagpur

Hi all,
I am planning to visit Pench on Christmas this year.
Can any one tell me how to reach their from Nagpur by bus/train/taxi.

It will be very helpful if anyone can provide the bus/train timings (from Nagpur & back) and fares.

I would also like to know the timings when the park is open.
How to roam about in the jungle ?
!! SKY is the limit !!

I did not get any replies from the forum and ended up renting rooms in Kipling's Court that is owned by the MP tourism department. NEVER go to this place. This place has worst value to the money and everything is like a 'sarkar kaam'. Its not as clean as most of the resorts in Pench. The food was mediocre and the staff was not very pleasant. There are no other perks to it, like swimming pool, clean play ground, machan, other outdoor activities.

I stayed at Baaz for half of my trip, which is around 4 km from the game. To be frank, it doesnít matter how far you are from the gate if you are going to be outside it anyway. Itís a different story if the resort is inside the gate. We liked the resort and their food very much. The staff was nice and helpful. Baaz is one of the expensive resorts in Pench though. There are several other resorts in Pench which are in the same class as Baaz. There are some more expensive ones too, like Mowgli Resort.(if i remember correctly, its the one owned by Taj groups)

If I had the means to obtain information, I would have stayed at Mowgli's Hut. I dont know about the food there. This is a cheaper option if you are a big group and want to stay for a longer time. The guide told us that it costs around 700Rs. per night for a bedroom. Food is not covered. I saw the bedrooms from outside and they looked very nice. The best part about Mowgli's Hut is that it is inside the park gate! Itís near the Karmazari gate. (Baaz is closer to the Khawasa gate).

My recommendation is Baaz since I have tried and tested it. If you are a adventurous kind, go for Mowgli's Hut and let us know what you find. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. Write back after your trip.

Btw, we did 2 safaris but didnít see any tiger. There's only 22 tigers in the safari area.
Mayur I am on the verge of booking in Baaz as it seems to be a small place cheaper than mowgli as per the websites. Baaz is claiming approx INR 2250 for a days stay without food and I am awaiting the AP plan costs.
While mowgli seems to be a bit costlier around INR 2800 for an AP plan as per Nivalink (I think the AP plan of Baaz might also come near the same price)

What I want to know is when you say Mowgli is inside the gate- I am assuming the whole resort would be a different feel being in a different zone. So a jungle feel inside the gates while a bit like a village feel outside it is my assumption.

Please suggest what should be a good option.

I also checked with Tigernwoods and the place seems beautiful but COSTLY around INR 4500 all food included for a cottage.

Mowgli's den is not inside the park, you have no resort inside Pench except at Karmagiri gate (not sure for the name)the forest house. Mowgli's den is an excellent and cheap place to stay.

Mowglis is not cheaper than Baaz its approximately costing INR 2800 (prices untill june as I still cannot find a direct number to the resort) for just stay excluding food.

I cannot find a website for it nor a phone number, I also tried calling just dial but they cannot find it in their listings. Would be great if you can find some contact detail so I can directly deal with them, else will have to go through nivalink (never tried them so not sure about their services, so its dont know mowglis as well nivalink so a total unknown territory )

Is it the Kiplings Court of MPTDC which is located inside the gate? I was trying to find a good map for pench and below is the best I could find. I hope there is something better than this someplace.

Tadoba has an MTDC resort along with 2-3 private resorts. Safari cost is 1500 Rs. I have a contact which can help you in travel as well. If you wish, I can share it with you.
