Nagarhole vs Periyar

For those who've been to both--if you could see only one of these wildlife sanctuaries, which would it be, and why.
Thank you

If you want to visit in the month of March, April & May, Nagarhole is highly recommended. You will able to see around 100 - 200 elephants on the banks of river.

Even Periyar will have good sightings during this time but when compared to nagarhole it iwll have less.

However during winter months wild life sightings is very less in Nagarhole as is the case in periyar.

In Nagarhole you will be able to go on Jeep Safari as weel as boat safari. While in periyar you will have only one option of boat safari.

There are no. of eco tourism options in Periyar

thanks, Ronak

We have to go in either December or January, so it seems neither will be outstanding for seeing the wildlife. Sigh... )-: Thank you for your reply.

I was in Periyar last December and the wildlife was non-existent (apart from a few otters and deer). I've no idea what Nagarhole is like but it can't be much worse. I was very disappointed with Peryar.

iv been to bandipur, mudhumalai and thekkady /periyar
and i have never spotted a Tiger ... i have wondered if they
really exist

its always the same animals which caper around ... deers, bisons
otters,wild buffaloes .....

i was atleast lucky enough to spot elephants though in both
thekkady and mudhumalai ...

but thekkady/munnar is a beautiful place as such and i would luv to be back there ...

btw nagarhole/coorg is also a great visit - iv heard but never
visited myself...

Tigers does exist in this parks. But sightings are very less. I had been to Nagarhole this October & I was also unlucky to see a tiger or a leapord (In three jeep safaris). But just three days before there was a tigersighting (Tigress with her three cubs) & two days before Leapord was sighted during morning & evening. So it's a matter of luck. But you are right sightings like this are very rare over here as compared to Bandhavgarh or Kanha.

Very ture. Three years back I went on an elephant ride in corbett. One Elephant left some five mins. before us & they did sight a tiger & our Elephant was accompanied by one more Elephant & we did not have the previlage of tiger sighting.

Thanks to ALL for sharing stories

LOL re the "tiger sightings" !!

I will be very happy to see elephants in the wild (vs zoo) and that at least seems likely.

Alas, the limits of time!! If only we had a month....Well, what we miss on this trip , we can hope for on another.

I've been in contact wtih the very helpful owner of MIsty Heights homestay in Kodagiri ( not the same Misty Heights as in Coorg) and he will take us to Nagarhole for a couple nights' stay near Siddapura.

Was on a Karnataka state bus from Bangalore to Calicut a couple of weeks back, and we passed by a fairly large herd of elephants bang next to the road while we were crossing the reserve forest. The elephants didnt seem to care about us, and our driver too didnt even bother to slow down. Yet another day in office for both of them I guess.

Back to the OP, if its Dec-Jan, I guess you will have a better chance at Periyar. But ultimately, a lot depends on your luck on that particular day.

The element of surprise

Bigzero thanks for your reply.

We'd be as thrilled--if not more so--seeing a group of sauntering elephants by the side of a public road, as we would be to have the more expected sightings in a specified wildlife preserve.

Hmmm...maybe we'll have to try for Nagarhole AND Periyar.
