Latest on Ranthambore??

Hi,

Can anyone out there update me on the present situation at Ranthambore? To be specific... What are the costs involved in getting into the park by a) Jeep b) Cantor.. Do jeeps still have to be booked in person at the Park office in the Village?

Has anyone been there in the last month or so? if so can you give us a review??

Are the locals in Sawai Madhopur still...hmmm how should i phrase this... not too keen on westerners? ( maybe this was just my perception)

I have not been there for a while and would like to have an idea before i head out that way..

Very Best Regards

Crodge

Ranthambore - a place to stay and an update

Hi folks,

I just got back from a little vacation in Ranthambore. I went on 3 safari's. After the first, I was amazed by the scenery and variety of animals but very sceptical that I would see even the hint of a tiger. Next day we went out and saw 6! 4 of these 6 were quite close to the road and one even walked right behind our canter! So there you have it – proof that even with the poaching the tigers are still around.

As for prices – canters cost 400rs. Jeeps I believe are around 900rs but you have to book in advance.

As for places to stay- I was at Hotel Tiger Safari but the energies of the manager and me must have been very off and he just seemed like a very angry little man to me. We moved across the road to Hill Valley View Hotel and felt like we stepped into an oasis…with large lawns, nice tables out on the lawn to eat at, a beautiful garden where they grow their own food to cook, and wonderful rooms! We were lucky, the town was dead so we got a great deal – 1,000rs for an air-con(not that it mattered) beautiful, quiet double room with attached “western” bath, t.v. sitting area and a wonderful porch to sit at and watch the stars.

Just wanted to give an update!

If anyone needs more info just pm me.

I'm jealous, I went on 3 safaris and didn't see any Tigers. Saw lots of cool animals and a "Tiger print", but no Tiger. Supposedly the day before I arrived people had seen a Mother with cubs and another Mother with cubs. I may go back to India and try again, but not sure which part to try. When I was in Ranthambore it was December (which is not the best because too many choices for them to get water. If I go back it would probably be March. Wonder which part is the best for a Tiger sighting?

Do you happen to know how to book jeeps in advance? Can you book directly with the national park or do you have to reserve through a hotel?

I think our travel agency might have booked Hotel Tiger Safari for us. Hopefully the little man there has had some anger management classes by the time we arrive. Were the rooms/cottages nice, at least?

Dear Chris,

We thank you for your mail,

Please note the following:
1. Jeeps may not operate for Safaris this year, so the other mode for game drives would be by open safari bus seating 20 persons. The forest department are yet to come out with a decesion, but I strongly feels that Jeeps are out of the scene this year.

Kinda sucks

Hi Chris

Did they say why? Presumably for conservation reasons? that is a shame - we will be there mid oct and a jeep looked much better. Did they mention the price of a canta?

Where are u staying?

Cheers

We hear also that Jeeps will not be allowed this season, only canters and that the canter price will go up to Rs 500. But this is NOT fact yet.
