Khana and Bandhavgarh

definitely the highlight of our trip this coming Feb. anyone have any tips and yricks?

How booked does it get?
What's the transportation within and between these parks?

Have a fave place to stay?

We plan on car from Jabalpur, then car from Khana and then car again to Kajuraho. Budgeting 5-6 days for the whole shebang.
IS this making sense?

last decade spent in the South, feel like I know nuthin 'bout nuthin in the North! thanx in advance

Where are you starting your trip? I mean how are you reaching Kanha/ Bandhavgarh/ Khajuraho?
what kind of accommodation are you looking for?

If you want to See Tigers, Bandhavgarh is a good choice.

approaching from Jabalpur, MG, and don't need much fancy in the way of accomodation, but Begum BiJ likes it clean and relatively bug free.

The route's fine, but I personally think that 5-6 days is a bit rushed. You need time to appreciate the parks.

Madhya Pradesh is infamous because of the conditions of the roads.

Hi Bij, The problem with national parks here is that most of them are very expensive.

If you are looking for budget accommodation then your best bet are the MP tourism bungalows at these places. Getting from Jabalpur to Kanha won’t be a problem but after that it may pose a problem (especially if you are not used to running around with your backpack).

The roads are pretty bad and it takes much longer than it is mentioned in the LP guide. A better idea would be to skip a park Kanha. From Jabalpur, you could take a bus/ jeep/ train to Bandhavgarh. Arrange a car to pick you up at Bandhavgarh for the drive to Khajuraho. If you are staying at the expensive places, then transportation is not a problem – you can hire the cars locally from the resorts.

Nope, gotta see both, lolol! Am expanding time budgeting to a full week for them. Hey, it's A list, gotta do what we gotta do! Why both? Well, as they are such a pain to get to, I don't want to return! We're willing to pay what it takes, and save elsewhere. We plan to arrive in Jabalpur via train from Jhansi (Lalitpur) @ 05:50, and hot the marble rocks, get a fresh start then next day for Kanha, then Banghavgarh 3 days later.

So here are my refined questions . . .
* I wonder if you get the same access to the parks regardless of accommodation. If so, then no need to go upscale, isn't it?

* How far in advance does one need to book lodging and jeep tour of park? Reason I am asking is that we'll be almost 2 weeks into our trip by the time we get there, and with 2 newbies to the North, I am leery of booking too far in advance and having newcomers get Delhi Belly & screw it up, know what I mean?

Barring Ranthambhore, I have never had problems getting a jeep ride at the last minute.
Your hotel/ guesthouse will help arrange that. They require 4 persons in one jeep – so they try to fill it up with the odd people who show up at last minute. I think it has more to do with luck and karma! (if my clients hear this – they will KILL me!)

The parks have fixed entry points – so the resort you stay in will determine the gate of entry irrespective of the accommodation charge. Do read up a bit more about the different entry gates etc.

Lastly, if you have the time - do visit Panchmarhi. In february, it will be nice to sit out with a cup of tea or with blankets inside the room - exchanging ghost stories! :-)

Bandhavgarh:

Only one gate, at Tala, all vehicles enter through Tala. There are no special privileges for any resort. However, do book ahead, as February can be very busy, if you would like a Gypsy reserved exclusively for you. You shouldn't have problems if you would like to cancel it later.

Hiring of elephants to track tigers in the late afternoons is no longer permitted.

great FB from y'all on my tiger aspirations!
New thinking is to dump Kanha, as it's so dam easier to get to Bandhavgarh only. Seems like it's also the more highly rated of the two. Utkal express goes from Lalitpur to Umaria- perfect if we're coming from Deogarh and Chanderi. Save time also by skipping Jabalpur (it was B-list anyway).

So then Khana goes on the coulda/woulda/shoulda nearmiss list, along with Mudumalai, last major southie park I have not visited

Why'd I have to fall in love with a whole friggin subcontinent?!?!

BiJ uncle, Kanha is something like 214 klicks from Jabalpur? Is that 214 one lane chunky asphalt road klicks? Yahoo...

I found Kanha web site with super pricey accomidations (about 8000rs for 3 night 4 days but includes 2 tours, parks fees, meals ect. :
http://www.innlog.com/common/frame.php?ID=6073

Maybe is wise to pick one park or the other and get to spend one more day looking for tigers instead of one extra day driving from one park to the other? Darn time budget.
