Kaziranga - the land of one horned Rhino.

We sailed on clouds of Meghalaya, decided to land on Majuli- for the dream island trip. So choosed Kaziranga en-route for a halt, for a green jungle view and for Rhino meeting

Kaziranga in Assam is a heritage site and famous National Park - home land of great Indian one-horned Rhino as well as big cats . Besides elephants, wild boars, barking deer, swamp deer, wild buffello, gaur etc. are living there who often love to meet you on jeep safari of elephant safari in green Kaziranga jungle. Birds and reptiles are there in numbers. Many wet lands inside the jungle offer visit of eater birds and animals as well as thirsty animals on the banks.

This is of great help : http://www.kaziranga.co.in/index.php

Kaziranga is easily reachable from Guahati (250 km), Jorhat (105 km), Tezpur (90 km), Silchar (220 km), Dibrugarh (200 km) and Dimapur (90 km).
Nearest rail Station is Furkating (80 km). For trains see: http://indiarailinfo.com/departures/684 and http://indiarailinfo.com/arrivals/684.

Lots of Hotels, Guest houses are there. Near Kohora, main entrance gate of Maziranga NP and ticket counter, lots of accommodation of different types are available on both side of NH 37.

1) For Govt, Tourist Lodge, contact- Office of the Deputy Director, Department of Tourism, Kaziranga, Dist Golaghat (Assam), Phone: 03776-262423/262429.
2) Iora Resort - a big one there, 03776-262410/11/12/37. http://www.kazirangasafari.com/
3) Jupuri Ghar, wooden huts - 094 35 196377
4) Wild Grass- 03776-2662085/2662011.
5) Cottage Hrishikesh- home stay, 03776-262420.
6) Dhansiri Lodge, medium range- 03776-262501,

For more, see this : http://www.assamtourism.org/wildlife.php and http://nagaon.nic.in/kaziranga/Where_to_Stay/index.html.

The gate for elephant safari is in Bagori, 12 km from Kohora. An interpretation centre is also there.

There is a Dhaba cum lodge (with four rooms only) near Bagori, which can be availed, if accommodation is not available near Kohora.

We met an excellent man as jeep driver in Kaziranga- Maheswar (09707845888). Besides safari, he may be contacted for elephant ride and lodge booking or for other info.

Another one was Diganta (09707673735) - for elephant safari

Completely new format, Sutapa! You have simultaneously opened 3 fronts .. Majuli, Mawlinlong and Kaziranga. Single visit...3 separate TRs. Let's see how you handle and negotiate the 3 different fronts with distinctly separate hues, colors and smells. Eagerly awaiting for more to follow.

Very informative and crisp DJ.

However, just a personal opinion, that although the separate threads are good from an information-housekeeping purpose, but somehow it is at the cost of conitinuity/fluidity of the TR.

But then, I am sure you are an experienced IMer and you will be able to handle it well.

Thanks a lot kanishka

Actually I covered two different states and three different types of places in a single trip. First, I had to choose one state forum or other forum to place total TR - that's I didn't like. Second, I wished to keep the essence of each place - being not mixed up with others. I know, it may be troublesome (for me), but please, bear with.

Journey to kaziranga from Shilong

Our last night in Shilong was rainy and cold !!!! Oh, we enjoyed the coolness, the shivering while walking lazily in Police Bazar market. Had an early dinner and 'early to bed' as we had to start for Kaziranga - 350km odd journey next day.

Morning Shilong, with yet-to-get-busy mood bid us goodbye and we traveled past zigzag hilly roads, school goers, old buildings, churches and green views of lovely Shilong. Soon we took NH 37 near Jorabat, by-passing Guahati. The road was smooth and good enough to have a fast journey and we reached the circular junction of NH 36 and 37. Had a break to Sugandhi Dhaba. Nice place and nice food

Before reaching there found an interesting thing... men by the side of NH selling fishes hanging them by hands to attract passengers. Big fishes (Chitol, Rohu etc. of 3/4/5 kgs) were lucrative enough (cheaper also, as our driver said) to stop cars. For our driver, Mainul, we had to halt during return journey.

We planned to go directly Kaziranga NP gate to avail evening jeep safari, before finding hotel. So we did. The journey throughout Shilong to Kaziranga was cloudy and often with heavy rain. We feared to find safari declared as canceled - as we're told, it happened often during rain.

But, our good luck was always with us, as far as it was about rain god. We had rainy nights, journeys through massive downpour - but rain never made us unhappy, never spoiled our plan nor even kept us waiting.

So, again in Kaziranga, he liked to bless us. We had an UNFORGETTABLE evening at Kaziranga NP - the last jeep took us three (with Mainul too, his first safari ) to the jungle..... all other jeeps were returning - so we had an soundless, undisturbed visit, the day's ending with soft, gentle shades of lights and the mild .... very mild raining - that composed a natural, very comforting and rhythmic song with awesome tranquility of Kaziranga jungle was all it bestowed on us.

The moments we spend on that afternoon/evening will remain in our memory till we live.

Yet to visit Kaziranga and the adjoining places as mentioned in the introduction to your TR. The information submitted so far is quite exhaustive; eagerly waiting for an exhaustive TR too.
I had been to Shillong during my childhood(by bus from Guwahati) and faintly remember the elephant falls at Shillong. The weather was cloudy throughout with intermittent rainfalls. However the journey from Guwahati was fascinating(with cornfields on one side and the hill slope on the other) and still remember having sumptuous breakfast mid-way on a hilly terrain to Shillong. From Guwahati we had been to Kamakhya on our return journey and I still remember our journey on a N.G.train over the Bramhaputra bridge a midst showers.

Wild life in Kaziranga -

We met four tuskers in one group, our guide said - it was not so common to have all tuskers in one group . Two younger of them kept fighting with each other, the medium one tried to stop them, like guardian [you can have a good video, Ronak].
