Indian Wildlife and National Parks - Looking for Lions in Sasan Gir or prowling for tigers in Corbett Tiger Reserve. Where do you go when nature calls?

Jhirna/Sitabani (Corbett) in August

Visiting northern India for 3 weeks in August with family. We will certainly visit Bharatpur, but would also like to go somewhere wilder. The best option is perhaps to visit the areas around Corbett?

Both Jim's Jungle Retreat (near Jhirna entrance) and Riverine Lodge (northwest of Ramnagar, Sitabani area) look good, and are not too expensive. I know it may rain a lot; I know large mammals will be difficult because of vegetation; I know Corbett proper will be closed. But what do you think? Are the open areas (Jhirna, ?Sitabani) sufficiently large and interesting for jeep rides? Will a token elephant ride be possible? Can we walk in Jhirna and Sitabani? I don't expect to see tiger, of course: but can we hope to see other large mammals? (I know birding will be good, but that won't keep my party happy!)

Thanks!

Phos

Other options I've considered but which seem less promising...

1) Sariska: open, but I think not much wildlife?
2) Valmiki (Bihar): appears to be open in August, looks interesting, but time-consuming to get to, and security appears to be a significant concern.
3) Nagarhole/Bandipur: this would be great, I know these parks are excellent, but it would be very expensive to fly south (and Kabini River Lodge is itself very expensive).

Sitavani is a secluded area. Jhirna will be better.

The common mammals are Elephants, Deers, Jackal, Mongoose, Porcupine, Cheetal, Sambar, Wild Boar, Monkey, Langur and foxes. Rarely spotted are Sloth Bear, Leopard, Panther & of course the elusive big cat, Tiger.

You may see Indian marsh crocodile and gavials on the Ram Ganga banks.

I can only suggest that you contact Joint Adventures(www.joint-adventures)as they know the area very well and would be the best people to guide you for birding and wildlife.

Cheers,

HH
