India opens safari lodges, ala Africa

India is to open many safari lodges, ala Africa. That have a low impact on the enviroment like the ones in Africa.

Here's the story from the New York Times.

The NY Times is a subscription paper. Can you give a short summary (or a password )?

And didn't India have wildparks accommodation for a long time now?

Why can't you open the link?

And yes, India has had lodges for years, but I guess their marketing these a little different. Maybe there trying to get that international traveler that usually goes to Africa for a safari. I think most people don't think of India that way.

I can open it but you need to subscribe with NYT for a lot of stuff, including this one. It's free I think but I generally click away thinking why bother.

It turns out I was just blocking their cookies so you get redirected to a subscribe page. Sorry & thanks (never too sure about why would a newspaper require a cookie, but... actually I am pretty sure and think it's unnecessary, but let's leave it for another thread )

... So I've looked at the article and honestly don't see what's new about it, except for calling it "African-style safaris" perhaps. Not to put them down or anything. Just makes you wonder.

Quote:
The safari lodge has come to India. A prominent South African safari and ecotourism company ... has joined with Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces to create wilderness safari experiences in India ... modeled on the sustainable standard it has established in Africa ... with relatively small, low-environmental-impact lodges (with six to a dozen rooms), local naturalists, twice-daily jungle safaris and regional food, all set on the borders of India’s tiger reserves... The first lodge by Taj Safari ... opened on Nov. 1 at Bandavgarh Tiger Reserve, which has one of the highest densities of tigers in India... though tigers are billed as the main attraction, other draws include leopards, hyenas, sloth bears, jackals, kingfishers and raptors.

Well for one thing the lodge seems to be IN the park which is new. Other than that it just seems to be a lot of fancy marketing. the choice of parks points to this, Panna and Pench aren't the best parks to see wildlife but are on the way to Kujaraho!!

It's just me I suppose but I've never like internet sites that don't quote tariffs!!

Just a quick off topic question, but do elephants get poached in India?

Everything gets poached in India. Elephants? Think illegal ivory

Even trees.

A single sandalwood tree is worth a fortune. think how much they sell the small ornaments for. It is actually illegal to posses more than a kilo or so of un-carved sandalwood!. I think this was the famous (and now late) Veerapan made his money.
