As far as the bandipur and nagarhole forest guest house is concerned you can book it at the head office in bangalore called aranya bhavan or at
(1) Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Bangalore
(2) Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Mysore
(3) Range Forest Officer, Nagarahole

Not Sure when they will re-open again Patnayak BUT with the continuation of "Extreme Dry" Weather out here , I think the chances of Re-opening in May Looks very Bleak !!

And adding onto that, If you are an adventourous group, a stay in any of the Forest Dep guest house will be interesting .If not, it might get very bored as 5 pm + until 6 am , you need to be just in your room and Mudumalai NP's forest Dept rooms are Located in Mudumalai-Gudalur Road [With a Detour of 200 metre from the main road] and it looked Deserted and Aloof even in day time with nothing nearer to it [ Please be aware I did not stayed till now but quite a few times I went through the highway and saw the Signboards of the guesthouses] !

Hope it helps
Velu

Is it possible to do forest safari in the morning on the way to Ooty? What is the procedure and timings for the forest safari.Any ideas on the rates? I would ideally like to do a Jeep safari instead of the Vans.

Certainly, yes.
-Typically, the timings are 7-9 am in the morning and around 3-5 pm in the evening.
-Mudumalai doesn't offer jeep rides. Bandipur used to but when we were there in jan, they said they have scrapped it. So as far as I know, both the WLS offer only van safaris.
-Rates are around Rs.75 pp in Bandipur and similar (if not lesser) in Mudumalai.
