How long will it take to drive from Jaipur to Ranthambore?

Can anyone give an indication of approximately how long it will take for us to get from Jaipur to Ranthambore by car?

We are wondering whether we can make the 2.30pm safari.

The Elusive Tiger..Ranthambore

They seek it here, they seek it there.
That dam elusive Tiger is No where.
Is it in route 1? Is it in route 2? Is it in route 3?

On my first visit a couple of years ago, I went on safari by jeep and was fortunate to see TWO tigers. I belive the route was No.3 near the lake. Last Dec. I went on safari by Truck and we took Route No.1 This route runs paralell to the Highway! Suprise, suprise, we saw No Tigers. I spoke to one of the guides and he suggested that the 5 Star hotels in private jeeps got first preference to route No.3

Happy Hunting

Whilst I'm not a zone 1 fan I didn't feel a presence of the road nearby.
We saw no tigers either in zone 1 but a few pugmarks and heard a few warning calls so tigers/leopards can't be far away.

I'm not sure that's true. I did 6 safaris in zones 3,4,1,3,2,2. We were staying at the Raj Palace which is probably classed as 'budget' within the Ranthambhore area.

At Ranthambore (different travels since 1996), I have never seen a tiger on the road 1 and this one is awful for me...

Thanks you guys.
OceanTragic. We were gonna take Ranthambore out of itinerary but your posts on here and to us (not forgetting your great blog)made us decide to keep it in and we are looking forward to the safaris. We know we may not spot a tiger but will enjoy anyway.

Cool, you made the right choice. But by God am I in trouble if you don't enjoy it, or Karim's too.

Go to experience the place, see everything around and immerse yourself, you'll leave fulfilled. If then you see a tiger then great, if not, you will have still enjoyed it.

Strangely I wanted to see a leopard more than a tiger, the one I saw in the Serengeti was just too far away and up the tree. I didn't see a leopard in Ranthambhore but saw a tiger chasing a wild boar: it was something special.

But what surprised me more than anything is just how much I liked the birdlife there. I still don't know the names of them but I don't care, they were fascinating. Treepies, now they're just great...even if they're evil looking. Eagles, vultures, noisy little parakeets, kingfishers and kites, they're all wonderful.

So have you picked your hotel yet?

Firstly, we have so many great tips from your family trip we won't blame you for anything! well, maybe a coupla things (ha ha)

Mmmm, about the hotel. We may just stay at a "posh place" it's still up for discussion. We have snorkelling gear to buy yet plus our rucksack or duffle on wheels if we can. We are packing light but not sure what to pack it in?

I am not sure whether or not we will go to Bharatpur or not yet.

Itinerary is nearly finished. We are not cramming too much in - well maybe a bit. Mostly we are trying not to do too much sight-seeing on the days we are travelling a lot, if that makes sense.

Have you thought about the Ranthambhore Bagh? I wanted to stay there but couldn't really justify it. I was really happy with Raj Palace but I would have liked to chat with Aditya at the Bagh and sample Poonam's cooking. I've read that the Bagh has its own jeeps and gets good guides for them so maybe you could "go posh" for the safaris.

If you're going to Ranthambhore perhaps drop Bharatpur. It is good and relaxing but Ranthambhore is a class above.

It's okay to cram it in, we did Agra Fort, Taj Mahal, Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri in 24 hours, but then the next day we just strolled around Keoladeo. I think the key is not to do loads one day, followed by loads the next and the next: that'll just do you all in.

Thinking of R Bagh. I like the advice of cram it all in one day and take it easy the next.

Our trip seems so far away even though we are keeping busy with the planning and prep. Just had a great weekend of days out in Wales, this country is so expensive though. Well, we did take sandwiches for lunch but went for a Thai meal on the way home!
If we carry on spending it will be hammocks in Ranthambore

Shouldn't you be going for days out in Rusholme?

There are no beaches there and the sunshine this weekend was too good too miss

We did have a takeaway from our local British Raj on Friday night though. £17 for some bland starters and a non-spicy jalfrezi. Rusholme is great but Akbars in Manchester City Centre is the best.

I've only ever been a few times to Shere Khan in Rusholme but I liked the fact it's all in one area. I once had chocolate-lime (like the sweets) ice cream there, not very Indian, but dead lovely. (Although saying it now, I wondering whether my memory is playing tricks on me.)

For leooards, Gir National Park is a best place. around 300 leopards in one forest!!! with added bonus of 'desi' lions
