For Bird Lovers - Birding in Uttaranchal
This summer I visited a small village (Bhallar) near Ramgarh in Nainital Dist.
It is a typically small Himalayan village with lots and lots of birding opportunities. Our bird count was: 1. Black Drongo 2. Black Francolin 3. Himalayan Woodpecker 4. Brown-Fronted Woodpecker 5. Brown-Capped Pygmy Woodpecker 6. Grey-headed Woodpecker 7. Streaked Laughingthrush 8. Jungle Babblers 9. Grey Bushchat 10. Verditer Flycatcher 11. Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher 12. Yellow-billed Blue Magpie 13. Red-billed Blue Magpie 14. Great Barbet 15. Himalayan Griffon 16. Oriental Turtle Dove 17. Spotted Dove 18. Red-rumped Swallow 19. Golden-spectacled warbler 20. Black-headed Jay 21. Long-tailed Minivet 22. long-tailed Minivet (female) 23. Great Tit 24. Black-lored Tit 25. Spot-winged Tit 26. Roufous-bellied Niltava 27. Roufous Sibia 28. Rosy Parakeet 29. Himalayan Bulbul 30. Black Bulbul 31. Red-vented Bulbul 32. Rock Bunting 33. Oriental White-eye 34. Grey-headed Woodpecker 35. Fire-breasted Flowerpecker Anybody interested in birding must visit this place. We stayed at a homestay called Ramalya Cottage. They have a website too. By the way one may also consider Pangot near Nainital which also has excellent birding. |

Hitanshu,
The way to Bhallar is: Kathgodam-Bhimtal-Bhowali-Ramgarh(Malla)-Ramgarh(Talla)-Nathukhan-Bhallar. From Nathukhan take the road going towards Hartola and (Bhallar is 5 kms). From Kathgodam its approx. 70 kms and takes around 2 hrs. No FRH or KMVN nearby... If you are keen on KMVN, you may try Ramgarh(Malla)..there should be birding around that area as well; though in my view it would be less - as its a bigger place and less of wooded area. |

you are right, its a bit expensive...but then i guess there is no way out if one wants to travel to offbeat places..if you are really keen on birding and walks...you'll fall in love with the place and the financial damage would be worth it.. |
