No cause for complacency though!

Quote: "If a proper census is done, the number I believe will cross 500," Bajwa told AFP Friday.

But further on it says "South Asia once provided a haven for tens of millions of vultures, especially in mainly Hindu India where cattle are not eaten by humans and carcasses are left out for the birds."

There's still great concern and the breeding programmes are ongoing. It will be a major piece of work to restore populations.

I was shocked at how few vultures we saw on our last trip. I remember from '95 (previous trip to Delhi) great flocks of them flying over Nizamuddin station in the early morning. This time we only saw egyptian vultures in most places, although we had great views of nesting white backs in Orchha.
