There's some good and some not so good report from Pench :

The good news is the Collarwali is again a mother as Soumya writes although one cub is lost and she is being seen with only 3 cubs.

The bad news is that Badi maa has not been seen in the park after December 2012 (News from the regular guides and drivers of Pench). Badi maa's 2 cubs from the last litter are also not being found.

The second not so good news is that out of the 5 cubs of the last litter of collar wali, only one or two cubs are being seen in the tourism areas. If you guys remember that out of the 5 cubs, four cubs were females and I had predicted that there were high chances of all the 4 females carving territories out of their mother's. It seems that I was wrong. It is the male cub that is ocassionally being seen apart from another female cub while 3 other female cubs have not been seen by any tourist anywhere in the park.

I see a lot of people from IM visiting Pench. Here is a guide that I am posting for the benefit of our members which will help us monitor the tigers and find out if anybody encounters these cubs from the last litter of collar wali.

An inverted Y and a half spot characterizes the right flank of cub 1

3 inverted Y's and a dark patch running from the top to bottom distinguishes the 2nd cub.

A dark patch shaped in the form of the numeral "8" and a spot on the trunk with absent marking characterize the 3rd cub
Name: cub4.jpg

Size: 39.9 KB

A dark patch running from top to bottom and a series of patterns shaped in the form of the letter "V" distinguishes the 4th cub .

Size: 36.2 KB

As of today I have not been able to identify a strong feature on the right flank of the 5th cub. In case if anyone of you have managed to identify a feature, then please add to the knowledge base here.

This guide is based on the right flank of the 5 cubs as I did not have good photographs of the left flank in my database. If anybody has good photographs of the left flank and the heads of these cubs, I request them to make similar guides and post them here.

Another good news is that of late we are encountering a lot of tigers in Pench Maharashtra - the other part of Pench. I will shortly be starting a documentation on Pench maharashtra Tigers to help our members.

regards,
Dr. A Ghosh

Tigers of Pench

As tigers have very wide home range, and also because tourism zones have been severely contracted following the NTCA guidelines, tiger sightings all over India's reserves have declined in general...for instance, the entire Kolsa range in TATR has been made out of bounds for tourists, meaning that the many resident tigers can no longer be seen by tourists...so i would not be very surprised if a similar effect is being observed at Pench. Are there any reliable sources in the FD,Doc??? Intensive monitoring is being carried out nowadays via camera traps. In Nagzira atleast, the info generated is often widely available to those who often visit the park. Whats the Pench FD's behaviour in that regard,Mr Abheek Ghosh???

There is both good and bad news from Pench...
First the good news ...the latest census, carried out jointly by the FD and the WII,Dehradun, estimates the presence of 72 tigers in the park,up from 65 in 2010. This estimation was carried out as part of the Phase-4(intensive monitoring) of the tiger enumeration programme...link in Hindi stating the same http://www.palpalindia.com/2013/04/2...cent-5032.html
Now for the bad news..one of the collarwali cubs(of the present litter) was found dead recently. It was suspected to have been killed by another male...hopefully the claims of the FD are correct and that it wasnt a dead brought about by human activities...

I am planning to visit Pench from Kolkata in the last weekend of October, around 25th to 27th. I am looking for partners. Are there any groups who are visiting Pench during that time and willing to include me in the group?

Rightly said Sameer. Patdev female is listed as Cub No.1 of the litter of 5 by Dr. Abheek. She'd also raised a litter last year. I'm attaching pics of her as a cub & as an adult, purely for reference purpose.

Dear ViShVa,

While the 1st pic (cub) belongs to Dr. Abheek Ghosh, the 2nd pic is courtesy of my driver-cum-naturalist Monu Dubey (Pench), whose work is available on his Facebook profile. Thanks !
