demise of the tiger

Ranthambore.com has posted that the official census is now 26 tigers---20 less than last year--almost a 50 percent reduction. No explanation given regarding the missing tigers.Sariska now has none. How many tigers are really left in India.Reports claim 4000.Could it really be less than 1000.Its a sad note that there are now more than 5,000 "pet" benghal tigers in the usa.Project tiger did such a good job .That now seems to have reversed itself. Will the Indian people cry out to save their signature great cat or will we only see tigers in zoos and texas ranches.

Being in zoos or as pets might be safer for them at this point, although domesticated animals can never learn to live in the wild. It's really sad - wish something could be done.

Selfishly, I'm sad that there are so few tigers left..maybe we shouldn't bother with R. at all.

Tiger Census

You can find the official census for tiger numbers at Ranthambore here:
http://projecttiger.nic.in/ranthambhore.htm

The census suggests that Ranthambore tiger numbers peaked in 1991 and had fallen to 32 by 1997. Of course it's up to you if you believe the official census or not.

I tried to access Ranthambore.com but the site is not working.
