Corbett help
Hi all,
Very nice site this is :-) I could do with a little help... We (2 of us) are visting India for 3rd time; 1st time was on package to 'Golden Triangle', 2nd time on tour of Kerala organised by Indian travel agent. That tour was fantastic & remarkably cheap - and we are not backpackers, we like our comforts :-) We have flight to Delhi in late Nov sorted, now trying to arrange some excursions... this is proving more of a problem than expected. Prices quoted by agents just seem ridiculous - I expected the North to be a bit more expensive, but Jeez... a 4 day trip to Corbett from Delhi would have cost us more than our entire Kerala budget... I mean $245 just for a car to & from Corbett!!! So what is a fair price for a 3 night stay in Corbett (inc travel from Delhi), and how best to arrange it? I am always happy to pay 'tourist' prices, but I object to being milked. Thanks for any help John S. if this is in wrong forum please move it :-) |

Hi Sunder--
Its seems you are being milked-- A straight drive from Delhi to Nainital -- csot be 1500 Rupees last time -- and it should be the same for you if not less. For accomodation If budget is not a constraint I would suggest making a direct booking with the Claridges for their hotel there . http://www.corbetthideaway.com/ Or for top of the range go for Tiger Tops. There are a lot of budget places to stay-- but the best thing would be if you could stay inside the park itself. For that you need to get permission from the park rangers. Indo Expeditions does tours 2 nights 3 days for about 5000 Rs http://indoexpedition.com/corbettpark.html all the best. Enjoy the tigers, elephants and the spotted and barking deer. If you decide to go on an elephant ride inside Corbett-- ask for the ISHTIAQ the Mahawat. He has a nose for animals and he is a great one to take you around the elephant grass. all the best. |

I know the non-citizen price per night for us was about $24 for the guest house in the park village. I have no idea what the car cost but it was certainly less than $100 for the SUV and driver for 4 full days.

Specially if you are planning to go beyond Corbett, or into the hills, you should try and negotiate a per km rate.
A year ago, I paid Rs1700 a day for a Qualis from Delhi. This included 200km a day, which was cumulative. This means that if you take the car for five days, you pay 1700x5 and you get 200x5 km thrown in. (not 200 km every day, but 1000 for five days). If you exceed 1000, you pay per km. I think it was Rs 8/km. Of course, driver tips are extra. The advantage is that you have the car with you daily. But if you are only going to Corbett, then this may not make sense. Corbett has accomodation inside the park, but it is usually booked long in advance, I was told. |
