Circus elephant elopes - video

A wild male Bengal elephant broke into a circus and eloped with one of the female elephants.

Three other female elephants escaped along with Savitri and her lover but have since been returned to the circus.

The young lovers are still free and have been spotted by local residents wandering through a nearby forest.

That's a great story, Lotus Blossom ! Thanks a lot for sharing.

Like you I hope they won't get caught.

Talk about a mixed couple - a wild guy with a circus girl. Wonder what the in-laws will have to say about this...

Any other elephant stories you'll find, I'm taking !

Best,

At last, one of my favourite songs of infancy come true!

To Bombay
A traveling circus came
They brought an intelligent elephant
And Nellie was her name
One dark night
She slipped her iron chain
And off she ran to Hindustan
And was never seen again

Ooooooooooooo...

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And trundled back to the jungle
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump

Night by night
She danced to the circus band
When Nellie was leading the big parade
She looked so proud and grand
No more tricks
For Nellie to perform
They taught her how to take a bow
And she took the crowd by storm

The head of the herd was calling
Far, far away
They met one night in the silver light
On the road to Mandalay
So Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trum
Trump, trump, trump

Ooooooooooooo...

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And trundled back to the jungle
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump

What a lovely song, Nick! Thank you!

A wonderful novel about circus people (and elephants) is by Sara Gruen, called WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. It would be a great book to travel with!

and Nick - that is seriously scary that you know all the words to Nellie the Elephant!! Even more scary is the fact that now i have seen the lyrics I have the tune totally stuck in my head and am mindlessly humming it - if you listen carefully you will probably hear it across the roofs of Chennai...........

I know, off by heart, perhaps one verse and the chorus.

Google is my friend

But I've got the tune stuck in my head now too!

Perhaps we could replace it with another of the same vintage

All I can remember from the song is...

On the road to Mandalay,
Where the flyin'-fishes play,
An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!

But here's my favourite verse from Kipling's poem, which provided the lyrics

I am sick 'o wastin' leather on these gritty pavin'-stones,
An' the blasted English drizzle wakes the fever in my bones;
Tho' I walks with fifty 'ousemaids outer Chelsea to the Strand,
An' they talks a lot o' lovin', but wot do they understand?
Beefy face an' grubby 'and--
Law! wot do they understand?
I've a neater, sweeter maiden in a cleaner, greener land!
On the road to Mandalay . . .

And before anyone rates the entire poem for modern political correctness --- do remember it was written rather a long time ago, and that it expresses the thoughts of a repatriated ordinary Brit soldier of the day. Mind you... they are thoughts I might well have had myself!

Woops.. ... better get back to elephants!

A romance ever fleeting........

http://content.msn.co.in/News/Nation...60907_1431.htm

Guess she felt it was fun while it lasted! Over the fling with the 'bad boy' and time to settle down??

Sort of a shame....the romance of running off forever with her true love was just too fairy tale to resist!

Wild elephants converge on Indian island

not re to the video but another elephant story, and a sad one. why are they looking for their (wandering) children? who has kidnapped them?! Calves are said to be VERY dependent on their mothers for 8-10 years, so it seems unlikely that they simply wandered away...

GAUHATI, India - About 100 wild elephants have converged on a river island in northeast India, demolishing homes, feasting on sugarcane and panicking residents, officials said Saturday.

Thousands of villagers were using firecrackers and bonfires to scare away the rampaging animals.

"Dozens of houses have been destroyed in the past three days by adult elephants entering human settlements to look for their wandering calvess," said the local magistrate, L.S. Changsan.
