Question Booking Corbett Forest Rest House

We are trying to book Dhikala Forest Rest House accommodation for three nights over the christmas period. I have sent a fax to the Director's office, Corbett Tiger Reserve and telephoned to confirm that they have received it but have been told that even though they have my fax they cannot tell me until the 15th November if my booking is confirmed. I am worried that by that time, if my booking is not confirmed then I will have trouble getting a room anywhere else at such short notice. Should I give up on Dhikala and book a room in a hotel in the buffer zone or should I wait for the 15th November? Does anyone know if the christmas period is busy at Dhikala.

Annie, I also once tried booking Dikhala but gave up after fax didn't go. Beyond that I have no experience. Try searching for Dikhala on this forum and I am sure you will get more information.

And welcome to Indiamike.

I don't want to be a wet blanket but Christmas & New Year's are peak season for Corbett. Chances of getting the Dhikala FRH would be extremely bleak. I would suggest that you wait till the 15th November & then try for a Resort if this doesn't work.

There are enough resorts, do bear in mind that the decent ones may work out a little expensive though.

Hi all, can you suggest some good resorts by the riverside. Ideally I would like to stay in a tent. Can you give me an idea of the cost?

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I had heard that Dhikala would be busy at Christmas - but won't the other hotels be all booked up by the 15th November if I wait till then to book?

No ! I think it's early...

Local travellers usually do not pre-book that much in advance...

And Corbett has plenty of accommodation.

It is best to be in Dhikala for the wildlife experience. Next option is of the satellite rest houses within the forest, Gairal, Sarpduli, Sultan etc. In that case you may have to carry own provisions for meals and lighting except in Gairal.
As Delhiwalla said it would not be late to get a place outside even if you call by last week of November.

Corbett NP, Ranthambhore NP and north India

We are trying to make a route in north India around 21 days. For tigers is my favourit animal, I try to sugest my BF to visit a National Park with me. But it is hard to choose Corbett NP or Ranthambhore NP.

Planning routes:

To go to the Corbett

Day2(Friday) Vanarasi;
Day3(Saturday) Vanarasi, and take the night train to Santa;
Day4(Sunday) Arrive at Santa in the morning, take the bus to khajuraho;

Day8(Thursday) Arrive at Armristar in the afternoon
Day9(Friday) Armristar
Day10(Saturday)take the evening train to Moradabad
Day11(Sunday) Arrive at Moradabad in the early morning...It is 5am!! How can we go to Ramnagar? How can we find an budget accomodation in the park? How can we go the safary?
Day12(Monday) Corbett NP
Day13(Tuesday) Corbett NP
Day14(Wednsday) Take the train from Moradabad at 10am, arrive at Jaipur at 8Pm.(Must we go back to Moradabad in the last day?)
Day15(Thursday) Take the night train to Jaisalmer
Day16(Friday) Arrive at Jaisalmer at noon
Day17(Saturday) Take the night train to Jodhpur
Day18(Sunday) Arrive at Jodhpur at 5am, and take the night train to Agra
Day19(Monday) Arrive at Argra at 6am
Day20(Tuesday) Argra, go to Delhi by train in the afternoon
Day21(Wednsday) Delhi

To go to the Ranthambhore NP

Day1(Thur) Arrive at Vanarasi in the afternoon;
Day2(Friday) Vanarasi;
Day3(Saturday) Vanarasi, and take the night train to Santa;
Day4(Sunday) Arrive at Santa in the morning, take the bus to khajuraho;
Day5(Monday) Khajuraho;
Day6(Tuesday) Leave to Orchha at noon;
Day7(Wednsday) Leave to Jhansi, take the night train to Armristar;
Day8(Thursday) Arrive at Armristar in the afternoon
Day9(Friday) Armristar
Day10(Saturday)take the evening train to Kota
Day11(Sunday) Arrive at Sawai Madhopur in the afternoon...The same wondering: How can I go to Ranthambhore NP? How can we find an budget accomodation in the park? How can we go the safiry?
Day12(Monday) Ranthambhore NP
Day13(Tuesday) Ranthambhore NP
Day14(Wednsday)Take the train from Sawai Madhopur at noon, arrive at Jodhpur at 11Pm

a) send a fax to Director corbett tiger reserve with names and passport numbers of visitors. Give a return fax number so they can tell you whether your booking is confirmed.Then pay by bank draft.

Moradabad to Ramnagar, take bus or taxi, 2 to 3 hours. Ramnagar to Dhikala and for safaris inside, hire a jeep from outside the reception at the Director's office.
For 10AM train from Moradabad move out of the National park the night before and stay at some place in Ramnagar or at Moradabad.

Ranthambore is easier. The train to Kota will pass through sawai madhopur. Sawai Madhopur is the place to stay. jeeps go from here to ranthambore for the safari. You can book the jeeps online in advance. May not be available at the last moment.Only limited jeeps are allowed entry on each safari. Another option is to book a seat on the canter (an open truck) with seats. Accomodation is private and is in and around Sawai Madhopur. Something will always be available.

For tigers I have heard Corbett is the hardest park to see them and that Ranthambhore would be easier to see them. Though there are never guarantees. I'd be interested in the actual experiences of others. Thanks.

Yes , you are right

Corbett is 3 time bigger in size then Ranthambhore, also Corbett is dense forest as compare to Ranthambhore

Yes, I agree.
I went to Corbett in Mar 08 and Ranthambhore more recently in Jan 09 with my wife and kid. We saw one tiger in Corbett that too very briefly and in the dense so no pictures could be taken. But in Ranthambhore we saw three different tigers/ tigresses in the four safaris that we took. And another tiger was spotted even in the day on the periphery of the resort that we stayed in! (though we reached the place after the commotion had scared him away)
But then we enjoyed equally in both the places as they have lots to see other than just the tigers!! In Corbett, Dhikala is good but then I found Gairal a better place for its quaint/ lonesome location, away from the madding crowds of Dhikala! (if I may call it that)..Ranthambhore is also magnificent amidst the ruins of forts..Jogi Mahal et al forming a wonderful backdrop to the wilderness!..

Since I live here... the sighting of tiger is very good in the Bijrani Range of CTR than the Dhikala. Dhikala has got one of the best landscape I hv seen anywhere. As for wildlife if you are lucky then u might get to see Tiger else, elephant,Tusker, ghariyal,wild boar, deer, sambhar can be easily seen in the dhikala range. If you are interested in birdwatching then you can have loads of fun watching the different species of birds. I advice for full day jeep safari at bijrani if you want to see TIGER. My best tiger sighting was at Bijrani only.

Corbett - Dhikala / Gairal

Hi Annie ,

If you want to experience the beauty of Corbett , stay inside the park at either Dhikala or Gairal .

Staying in the resorts outside is something I would not recommend if you are seriously into nature and wildlife .
