bharatpur keoladeo park & wider UP itinerary?
we are planning to drive down from delhi to bharatpur - is it practical to cover vrindavan, mathura and agra sites and reach bharatpur in the same day? we want to do the bird watching circuit early morning the next day - how early is the park open? any advise would be very helpful - thanks.

I think it opens at seven, depends on what time the sun sets. As soon as you are in your lodge, ask.
It's worth taking a guide, they know so many places where to find birds you will not find on your own. Owls in nests for example. It's an amazing place and after the very wet monsoon this yoear, it we be very full of birds. You can stay inside the park. The hotel is not worth the money (rooms are just OK, the restaurant certainly is not) but is is nice and quit. Oustide, I like this place with a nice dining garden. http://www.hotelsunbird.com/ |

thank you -
i'm so relieved to have replies - i'm going a bit nuts trying to plan out this whole thing!
shashank, you suggest leaving really early - would we be able to see about four temples in vrindavan and then the dwarkadeesh and other main sites in mathura all in about four hours? and if this is reasonable, wouldn't we be able to get to agra by 4pm if we left delhi around 7am? now about keoladeo park, we are looking at hotel saras which seems to have the rtdc office in it. we really want to do the bird watching thing early -- i remember years back going with a second cousin and her friends in delhi and we left around 4am and it was just spectacular (i was too young though and don't remember where we went; and am unfortunately out of touch with this cousin!) so anyhow, would we be able to get a guide that early - would it cost us a leg and an arm more for this? thanks again for all the help! |

No. you can't. And you really wouldn't want to, either.
This thread is a version of a common question here at IM. "How much can I cram into my trip?" meditate on it this way, fellow traveler . . . India is a Buffet with endless dishes. You've got one plate, and one hour for lunch. That hour includes commute time to the restaurant. This restaurant is one you've been wanting to visit for ages. You really want to enjoy your meal, isn't it? Bon apetit!

As soon as the parks are open, guides will be around, don't worry about that. It will not be more expensive, no worry.
Saras, from RTDC is quit dreadfull, my earlier suggestion really is better. I also stayed in the Eagles-nest two times, also very nice but al little more expensive. I've been in Bharatpur 7-8 times, I know what I am talking about. |

Whoever runs your hotel will likely introduce you to a guide the night before, and you can make arrangements at that time. My guide arrived before it was light, and we rode into the park just as the sun was coming up.

If you really wanna cram it..leave at 4 am from Delhi...by 6 OR 6:30 Am you can start Darshans in Mathura Vrindawan...if they are not too much crowded then you can get free by 10-11 am...
Bharatpur can be reached by 12 o clock and you can leave from that place at 6-7 pm or later...or if you are looking for a hotel option you can stay there as well.. |

big thanks!
kingfisher, thanks so much for the suggestions - i did check out hotel sunbird and the location is pretty great. huge price difference for the hotel inside the park (any real advantages as far as how early we can get in to see the birds?) wonderwoman, where did you stay?
and shashank, let me clarify - we don't need to get to bharatpur until later that evening (we're planning to spend the night there) - so with this in mind, could be leave delhi around 7am, do the temple visits at vrindavan and mathura between 9am and 2pm, and then also see agra (sikandra, taj and the agra fort) between 4pm and 7pm? if this is possible, we don't mind getting to bharatpur as late as 9pm that first day. but if this is still way too rushed (yes, don't want to really "cram" it all up into a mess in the end ), we could go from mathura directly to bharatpur and then return to agra the next day -- what do you guys think?thanks again for all the help! |

Hi Global yatri,
If you stay inside the park you can not go in earlier as when you stay outside. Except for the quit surroundings, there are no advantages with staying in the hotel inside. Outside, you have a much nicer place, an internet cafe next door (they sell a nice-Bharatpur coffee mug there, I use it every day )and it is just more fun to stay there. The hotel inside has a lot to learn (Would be a lovely job to stay there two years as manager and change this building into a lovely hotel!)Well, if you vist the park, go inside, drink a coffe on the nice terrace and see for yourselve). keoladeo vs. ranthambore?
bharatpur actually sounds like the town is pretty laid back even with the whole touristy park trips etc. how does this park compare to ranthambore (in terms of crowds and viewing the 'natural' state of things ?)
