when going from Delhi, Bharatpur comes before Agra...I would choose between bus and train depending on the schedule of train and availability ...it would hardly be a 3 hours journey and for any regular traveler its hardly anytime to be uncomfortable in any mode of transport..

Bus is more convenient to go to Bharatpur. There are lot of buses ply directly to Bharatpur from ISBT near Nizamuddin. Delhi IMrs can tell the exact name of the bus stand.Every hourly buses are available. At Bharatpur take a auto and ask him to drop you at the main gate of bird sanctuary.Just opposite of the gate there is a road, go through this road and you will get many budget guest houses with geyser in the bathroom.I stayed one of them and it costs me Rs.400/= per day.Food is optional, if you want it the landlord will cook it for you against charges. It is not also very costly.

hi, I was just in Bharatpur and saw the bird sanctuary - it was a complete let down - apparently there wasn't much rain this year and so there aren't many water birds there. Just a heads up if this is the reason you are going. I really wish I'd just spent an extra night somewhere else.

Also, there is a guest house that is listed in the lonely planet as just a good internet, money exchange place - it's called the Royal -something ..I think - they've recently added rooms - starting at Rs150/200 (Single/double) and they look clean, with new shower/washrooms - include towels, soap etc. They also have new matresses and real pillows (not those rock-hard things many budget places have.
I didn't actually stay there - the owner was excited to show me while I was waiting for friends that were using the internet. It isnt' too far from the park - ... Since I didn't stay there I can't say anything about the restaurant. But it's worth checking out.

I stayed at the Kiran, and while the place was ok, a few of the other guests and I felt they were a little pushy. I paid Rs200 for a room - although I believe there is a single for Rs150 if it's available. I also found the food overpriced for what it was (compared to that in Delhi, Agra, Varanasi - maybe this is normal for a smaller place?).

Hope I haven't put a damper on your plans and that you have a good trip

Oh guys I hadn't thought I'd get such meaningful replies so soon.

So that's why IndiaMike is such a hit.

Thanks all of you...Shashank, TasuRay, Travellerette.
But tell me, even if there aren't many birds around, wouldn't it be nice to just soak in the quiet amidst nature and green and the blue of the lake...
Or could you guys suggest any other place/s to disappear to from the hubbub of Delhi over a weekend...in fact over the coming weekend...23,24,25 of Nov?

the lake is dried up. I think a visit to the park is nice and interesting anyway - there are still birds though not in huge numbers, and walking around could be a good break. Take a trip over to Fatepur Sikri which is also relatively calm and very interesting.

It has been the same story for Bharatpur...Not enough water for so many years. For us it was a complete letdown. The only good point was that we got a guide who really knew birds and was well read too. Sorry, I don't have his name. Yes the sanctuary is a quiet place. But that is all about it. May be Delhi IMers will come in with suggestions for you to find another quiet place nearby.

Question One Day Trip - Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Hi all,

I am planning day’s trip outside Delhi and am considering Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary as an option. Could anyone suggest me about the following:

1. How far is it – would it be feasible to go there by a hired cab or public transport (I prefer cab)
2. I have been hearing that the birds are becoming lesser and lesser – could it still be worth it to go, what else is there to do apart from birds?
3. Do they have any decent hotels there with good facilities – what could the approximate per day cost be? Anny suggestions for which hotel to stay in?
4. Any other thing that I must know?

Thanks all!!!

Reach Bharatpur only a few hours drive in the afternoon & visit the park before sunset, this is the time when birds get back to their nests. Spend the night & go bird watching again early in the morning. Return after breakfast.
Falcon guest house is a good place to stay.

One can get easily within few hours to Bharatpur.Though birds are lesser nowadays due to water problem, still there are resident birds, cheetals, jackels, neelgai, pytho ns,and off course migratory birds etc.
'Saras'is the RTDC hotel there, which is a good one. There are lot of decent guest houses. But visit the sanctuary in the afternoon or in the early morning. You can be back to Delhi within 4 hours.

As the lake is almost dried the bird life is very much short of mark as it used to be. Still I would feel worth a try.

Bharatpur Birds Early April?

I'll be in Rajesthan in early April (en route North) and was wondering whether it would be worth stopping at Bharatpur to see the birds. I've read that this is not such a good time to go. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Khamaghani,
I am not sure how it is in April to visit Bharatpur, I was there on the 5th of december 07 few days back, i saw one Owl, a paython(Small One).2 ducks(from Ladak)1 spoted deer and 2 big deers, there was no water (Dry)and a lot of Cattel from nearby villages grazing in the boundry of the sanctury. In the period of migration when birds fly from miles to this Sanctury ,It was total failure this time.

1] April is not the best time to visit Bharatpur.

2] Plus for past two - three years due to water scarcity in season also you will find less number of birds, so visiting Bharatpur in April is not advisable.
