I just got back from Bharatour..and we did visit the sanctuary there as well for 1 day. Im no expert but given the amount of people (birdwatchers, not random) i think it might be something you would like to include.... but like i said...no expert.

I would suggest your to buy an Outlook Traveller guide book on Wildlife holidays in India. It costs around Rs 300 & would be very useful to you for planning your trip.

Periyar Tiger Sanctuary at Thekkady in Kerala. periyartigerreserve.org
Wildlife sighting is virtually guaranteed in April and May which includes elephants [but naturally], malabar giant squirrels, lion tailed macaques, nilgiri langurs, assorted deer, huge monster size butterflies inc. troides minos and blue mormon [largest & 2nd largest in peninsular India], and a huge variety of birdlife. Do take a ride on the 7am boat in the Upper Deck, and also a jungle walk with the tribal guides for optimal wildlife sightings. I could happily spend a month here and discover something new every day. My personal opinion is that Periyar Sanctuary is the very best, and I love jungles.

If you are visiting any of the other sanctuaries, do check whether they are open during the summer months as several are closed due to the possibility of forest fires.
