Best places to view wild parrots?
I am wondering where are to best places in India and Nepal to see flocks of wild parrots. I spent a few days in Rewalsar on a spiritual retreat a couple of years ago and one of my favorite memories was hearing the 'totas' screeching overhead while we were meditating(though it was distracting), then in the early evening borrowing a pair of binoculars and watching them loudly swooping around before roosting in trees on the cliff above the lake, behind the Shiva mandir. I saw Ring-neck parakeets, Alexandrine parakeets, and Plumheaded parakeets(I know my parrots). I am wondering where are other places where they can be seen in such great numbers?

weirdly, in Bangalore, they're always flying around screeching their heads out. Early mornings and evenings,a small flock of 4-5 of them create a nice racket near my house and then fly off.
But you don't see them like in hte wild.

Bangalore has thousands and thousands of Rose Ringed Parakeets.
If you are in north india, best places to see truck loads of alexandrine parakeets is Rajaji National Park, Red breasted parakeets in Corbett National Park. Rose Ringed Parakeets could be very common in many cities. |

Thanks all for your replies - too bad I won't be going to Bangalore this time, seems like there are lots of them there. My itinerary isn't fixed at this point but I think I'll be spending most of my time around Jaipur, Agra and Varanasi. I'd love to make it to Rajaji NP - I used to have a pet Alexandrine and they are my favorites - I've got a photo of a male Alex on my mousepad in fact.
aurunchs - is a red-breasted parakeet the same thing as a moustache parakeet? The owner of a sari shop I used to go to on Freak St. in KTM had one as a pet -very sweet and friendly. Did you know that we NYers have our own wild parrots(Quaker or Monk Parakeets), in Brooklyn? Here's their website: http://brooklynparrots.com/ |
