Basic question; getting to ranthambore

I've my heart set on going here in-between visiting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Hoping to do two or three day safari and because I'm going peak season I'd like to pre book the safari. However, I'm confused!! I'd like to do my own thing in the three cities, so not overly keen on a guided tour between them, so what is the best way to do a safari at this national park!? Should I get a train from agra to Jaipur and from there book a couple of day safari which would return me to Jaipur? If so, any suggestions where I could book this? Or ahpuld I get a train from Agra to the nearest town to the park and get a safari from there!? Very confused on this subject...there is lot of info about he park but very little on all the details of getting there, where from and where booked

If you're going in peak seaon that you need to book up the safaris as soon as the booking lines open, which I can't remember but it's something like 30/60/90 days beforehand. If you try to book a safari when you are in India then you will be disappointed.

Agra is not the nearest station to the park, it's Sawai Madhopur.

You can get to Sawai Madhopur by train from Agra or from Jaipur or many other stations, Bharatpur being another good bet if you fancy visiting Keoladeo.

I wouldn't underestimate the usefulness of a car+driver especially when visiting places like Fatehpur Sikri.
