I am planning a trip for next April, stopping in Bangalore & Ooty
and hope someone knows a contact to book a hotel/Safari in Bandipur. Tried various hotels/agents via e-mail but no response.
If you have a better idea that's okay - for instance stay in Mysore and just have a day trip to Bandipur.
Thanks

Hi,

If you are Ok for highend, you can try and book "Jungle Lodges and Resorts", Bandipur run by Karnataka forest department[ This Chain is Genuine,Focusses very heavily on Wildlife].It's 2 kms before the Bandipur WLS[ From where general Forest Safari Starts and Ends]. There is no option for Reserving the General Forest Safari organized by Forest dept.

For General Safari, there will be a Queue to board the forest dept bus and the Safari timings are 6 - 9 am and 3 - 6 pm.

Again, there is no real need to stay at Bandipur as Ooty is hardly 45 kms Away from Bandipura [In Car].

My suggestion is:-

Once you are done with Mysore, Hire a car and start from Mysore by 5:30 am and you will be in Bandipur around 7 am . Try out Forest Safari which will be 1 Hr 15 Minutes and then Drive straight to Mudumalai [ 10 kms From Bandipur and this 10 km you have maximum chance of sighting all what you just saw on Safari.] and Proceed to Ooty Via Kalghatty Ghat road.

App.Kms & Travel timings:-

Mysore-Bandipura --> 70 kms [ 1 1/2 hours Max]
Bandipura-Mudumalai --> 10 kms [ 45 minutes. You may ask your driver to drive at max 30 km/ Hr speed in this Forest Range to enjoy the forests and also to look out for wildlife]
Mudumalai-Ooty --> 37 kms [ 1 Hr 30 Minutes].

Mysore-ooty highway passes Via Bandipur & Mudumalai Forest Ranges .

Hope this helps

That's a great help, thank you very much.
So I could stay in Mysore for a few days then hire
a driver/taxi visiting Bandipur and finishing a long day at Ooty.
Have I got this correct....

Should I ask very very roughly how much that taxi for the day is going to cost - just a good guess and if I post back here another time would you by chance have a contact in Mysore.
Thanks for your help again...
Also just for fun what time is it in Mysore - it's almost 08.15am here in the UK.....

I did not used Rental Taxis till now but it will be approximately 6 Rupees /Kilometer and usually we have to pay To& Fro Charges even though our intent is to travel one way.

It's 12:45 pm at Mysore and in whole Of India.

In South indian sanctuaries, normally we can see Deers, Monkeys,Elephants,Bisons,Fox and Tiger / Lion / cheetah sighting is rarest of rare. I visited all the South indian Sanctuaries , some more than once and I did not have any luck till now to see Tiger /Lion or Cheetah.

I have never seen Bisons so that would be a first. So I would be very lucky to see a Tiger. You have been a great help and I do appreciate it. I was thinking of a couple of nights or so in Mysore followed by five nights in Ooty but you may think Mysore is too short and Ooty is too long - what do you think...

If possible, Plan out Mysore for 4 Days and Ooty /Coonoor for 3 Days [Include Toy Train ride from Ooty to Mettupalaiyam] .

Mysore's Local Tourist spots [2 Days]:-

Palace,St. Philomena's Church, Zoo[ One of the Best maintained Zoos in South India],Karanji Lake [Butterfly Park + Boating in lake + Perfectly maintained Gardens],Chamundi Hills[Best in Evening], Brindavan Gardens [Best in Evening]

For Remaining 2 Days in Mysore you could visit:-

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary[12 kms from Mysore], Somanathpur temple [Architectural Marvel- 37 kms from Mysore], Talakkadu [ A Temple Town buried under sand - 30 kms From Mysore]

Ooty's Tourist Spots [2 Days] + Coonoor's Tourist Spots [1 Day].

I am planning to make a trip to Bandipur in Oct around 14-17. Travelling from Cochin.
Can anyone advise how to commute from Cochin to Bandipur by train.
I am planning to book the government resort as I am a budget traveller
I have a contact for the gypsy safaris. But we are only 2 of us. Do you think I can just show up at the reception counter on 14th and try and book a safari and look for 4 other people for the safari. Can you help as I do not wish to take the canter.

thanks
