Hi All,

I am really keen for a tiger sighting and hence decided to stay 3N in Bandhavgarh, 2N in Kanha and 2N in Pench. I have planned to take 4/5 safaris in Bandhavgarh, 2/3 in Kanha and 2/3 in Pench, though I know very well even that might proved to be insufficient if luck is not there. Planning to visit in End Feb and begin March.

I need views/suggestions on followings:

1. Nice and medium budget accomodations in all three places. In Feb end/ March Begin should I need AC or Aircooled room can do the job? How hot the places are in that time of year?

2. The Safari Cost has increased quite a bit it seems.

Park Entry Fees - Rs. 1030/- (may increase again in future)
Guide Fee - Rs. 200/- (As told by hotels)
Car Rental - Variable (most likely depends on Economics of demand and supply on a specific day/season)

Can you please give me contacts of people who can arrange Gypsy specially in Bandhavgarh and Kanha for these forest trips. I have got contact of Ajay in Pench from IM and he seems to be very helpful.

Also does it make sense to book the park entry in advance and then arrange the Gypsy on spot? Only concern is there should be enough Gypsys as I would have already incurred the entry fee by then.

3. For sighting of tiger or wild life is concerned, I am planning to take

a. 4 Safaris in Tala 1 zone and 1 may be in Magadhi zone of Bandhavgarh
b. 2 in Kanha zone of Kanha
c. 2 in Touria zone of Pench

Any change, should I go for in above plan?

Thanks for your help.

I have visited bandhavgarh....So suggestions are for Bandhavgarh only

1) Air cooled should be fine...You would be spending 10 hours in Jungle...You can check "Skays Camp" run by Satyendra Tiwari..If you are looking for luxury stay, then this place might not suit you. If you are looking for best guides and nice place to stay, then Skays camp is best...
For more information, check out
http://skayscamp.wetpaint.com or http://skayscamp.wetpaint.com/page/S...a+Kumar+Tiwari

Gypsy can be arranged by Satyendra Tiwari.

Its always advisable to book safaris online as early as possible...Gyspy and stay can be arranged later....

If need more info, send me PM

One more suggestion,
Journey from bandhavgarh and Kanha is around 5 hours and you spending 2 safaris in Kanha will not be enough... Kanha is a big park...

Thanks a lot Imtiazkhank for useful information.

I have sent you a PM, it would have been great if you could please reply the same.

I don't find any contact number for the camp in website, appreciate if you could share that please.

Regarding Kanha, I have kept 2 safaris intentionally as I have 2 more to take in Pench, so I may take 3rd in last morning in anywhere in case I like the park, keeping that option open based on experience of first 2. Major attraction to me is tiger sighting and that's why I want to concentrate on Bandhavgarh first with 4 to 5 safaris. Safaris are so costly, it is really difficult to take more than 8/9 due to budget constraint, that's one of the reason why I need to get a better bargain in Gypsy rental.

Thanks again for your help.

Ya..MP National park have double the entry fee from last season...Luck us, They had increased the entery fee to 2000 from Dec 15,2010 to Jun 15,2011...They had made MP national parks as premium zone....They rolled back that decistion...Now 1000 Rs is the entry fee...
Earlier I used to go alone or with one friend...Now I have get a group of 3/4 to spend more time in my fav place (Bandhavgarh)...
WildLife is getting costlier in India...

Thanks for the PM Imtiaz, you are very correct, I have no idea why these guys are making it so costly and almost taking it out of reach of common man. But obviously the places like Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Ranthambhor, Kaziranga would be worst hit as those are the popular destinations to many wild life lovers.

Thank God still we have Manas, Namdapha those are not so commercialized and due to access problem still out of bound for many.

I don't know if MP Govt again going to hike the fees as the park entry booking site shows a disclaimer that fare can go up and in that case you have pay the difference at gate.

Hope it won't for this season atleast

We visited Kanha in 2005 so I don't have any idea about the actual price for the safaris.
There is a morning and an afternoon safari. The biggest part of the amount we had to pay was for the whole day so it was un- economic to take just one.
I don't know with how many people you are but the gypsies are for four persons.

Vonkla, your post is now forcing me to ask 2 more questions in this forum.

1. So far I understood atleast at present, the park entry fees / guide charge and Gypsy Fare all are per round trip basis, not for the entire day. So if you would like to take one you would pay for one (which is presently 1230 + Gypsy charge) and if you would like to take two (morning and evening), you can even do that by paying the costs of two safaris. As per present rule, I don't see any thing that would make one safari a day un-economical. Am I missing something?

2. My idea was a Gypsy carries total 8 persons, including Driver and Guide, so atmost 6 visitors can be accommodated in one. We would be 4 adults and 2 kids. Any one here who could clarify the present policy for Kanha/Bandhavgarh/Pench?

Cheers!!

We arrived late in the MP resort inside Kanha and did not want to start next day at six for the morning-safari. We told the manager and he explained the tariffs to us which made clear it was un-economical. I think that it had to do that beside the hire price for a gypsy there is also a huge entrance fee to the park. I think that was for the whole day.

You are right about the size of the gypsy, see this thumbnail.

That's the change it seems from 2005 to now.

The current safari cost structure is like below : (All costs are per car per trip basis and not for full day)

1. Park Entry Fees - Rs. 1030/-** (Paid to MP Forest Dept)
2. Guide Charge - Rs. 200/-
3. Gypsy Hire Charge - Rs. 1500/-

Total = Rs. 2730/- per trip

So 2 safari in a day means spending Rs. 5460/- for the day.

**for Indian Nationals only using hired car registered in the forest, for foreign nationals Park Entry Fee is just double, rest are same I believe. Also if someone wants to use own car, it would result in extra costs.

I've been to Bandhavgarh and Kanha this year and last year to Pench. Did 6 safaris at Kanha and 2 at Bandhavgarh. If I remember, we paid close to Rs 1750-2200 per safari all inclusive (depending on B'garh/Kanha & morning/evening game drives). This includes the cost that one pays to the gypsy driver as well. If you make a deal with the driver you can make that even cheaper. And you pay 10-15% less if you go with same driver for your morning & evening game drive.

Regarding your choices of tiger reserves, I would recommend Tadoba over Pench. Better sighting of tiger and less tourists.

You should spend more time in Kanha than in B'garh. It has a good forest, and more wildlife (like gaur, swamp deer, etc.). And also you can try Mukki zone of Kanha along with Kanha zone.

You are correct that was the rate for season closed in June 2010. When it opened in October, park fee was increased to 1030 (which was lesser last year) and guide charges become 200. Along with that Gypsy owners also increasing their price, Gypsy rate of Bandhavgarh has already increased and in Kanha it is going to be increased from 1st Nov.

Even Govt decided to increase it to 2000 from 16th Dec which they somehow rolled back for sometimes now, though if you try to book safaris online, it throws a disclaimer that price revision may happen and you have to pay differential in gate, They don't want common man to avail these trips it seems.

But I completely agree with you, if I can contact with a driver/owner, it would certainly be cheaper. Do you have any contact regarding Gypsy hire in either Kanha/Bandhavgarh?

I understand Kanha deserves more time and trying to modify schedule to make Kanha 3 Nights as well. Any recommendation of budget stay in Kanha/Bandhavgarh and Pench?

Thanks again

During our visit our morning safari was from Kisli to Mukki gate, had lunch there and in the afternoon we drove back. It was a great ride and for the most part we were the only gypsy around.

Wow, lucky you!! I think there was no zone based system there in Kanha then. Now you have to buy entry pass based on the zone, Kanha/Mukki/Sarhi . So no way the drive through is possible in a Gypsy now. But I can imagine what a brilliant drive it would be

We stayed in MP forest rest house in B'garh & Kanha. And for Pench, we stayed at Seoni. So I can't recommend on accommodation part. Try Baghira Log huts (Kanha) run by MP Tourism. It's just outside Kisli gate and I'm sure you'll sight wildlife from their property.

When we were in Kanha this summer and our friends drove from Mukki (in fact even further from Mukki) to Khatia in the night! Of course they had the permission of the field director, Kanha for official work and this can't be experienced by others. And now if you enter from a zone, you'll have to exit from there only but you can drive in any of the tourism area as you wish.

Don't worry about gypsy contacts. Your resort will make that arrangement. If you want to save some cost, then you can approach the drivers on your own and you can make a deal. Should not be a problem at all atleast in B'garh/Kanha. Just outside Khatia or Tala gate, there are many driver waiting for clients. In Kanha, there was so much competition amongst them that they gave "discounts" too!
