Assam bans begging by elephants

"Elephant begging on the roads, specifically in front of temples, have become a common sight. There are instance of such animal going berserk injuring and killing people and destroying properties. This is an offence under Section 289 of the IPC," Malakar's order said. "Many a time, privately owned elephants are made to walk on roads in towns and cities, and compelled to suffer. This is an offence under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960."

thank you peta, thank you assam.

i loathe seeing animals used like this. me and ganesh are elated about this ruling and hope that it will be enforced and that other states will adopt it.

Great move By the govt in Assam. This must be enforced all over India, with Particular emphasis to Tempes in Tamil nadu, where elephants begging/Blessing is very common.

The politicians should also be stopped from donating elephants to temples.

yes, i saw this when i was visiting the Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai. admittedly, it was a sweet sight to watch the gentle way that the elephant lovingly touched the heads of those seeking her blessing, but i could see that she was very agitated with having to stand on the concrete in the heat all day. elephants are one of my favorite creatures, and ganesh is a special deity to me, but i feel just as sad when i see the "dancing" bears that are made to stand upright to entertain passerbys, despite how exhausted they seem.

Am glad someone took the step.. I hope rest of the country will follow, especially Kerala.

I was depressed to see the appalling state of elephants at Guruvayur.
