A weekend trip to birder’s paradise in South Sikkim - Kitam & Sumbuk in greater Rangit
Greater Rangit is a beautiful sub-tropical belt in southern Sikkim. The highlights include Kitam bird Sanctuary which has more than 200 different species of birds, unique sal chir pine forest, panoramic views and of course the emerald green Rangit river. It is characterized by warm summers and pleasant winters. The natural treasures provide an ideal setting for nature and adventure.

Kitam is the only bird sanctuary in low altitude and is rich in birds and plants. It is a good destination open throughout the year and becomes pleasant during autumn and winter.

Kitam & Sumbuk are two villages under Greater Rangit adjacent to the bird sanctuary. The village has moderate climatic condition, enriched with lush green forest, flowering plants and wildlife habitat. Besides these, natural view points, guris ( ruins of old forts )are some of the attractions of the area.

The village has multi ethnic community with rich cultural heritage. The village is well connected with roads and has access to all parts of Sikkim & West Bengal.

Peacock Breeding Forest:
Extensive dense forest at the southern slope of Sumbuk is popularly known as Peacock Breeding Forest. It is the most favorite habitat of Indian Peafowl in Sikkim and they are easily visible and can be photographed. Indian Peafowl, Red Jungle Fowl, Kaleej pheasant, Himalayan Flameback, Scarlet Minivet, Green Magpie, Red vented Bulbul, spotted forktail are among the common birds. Some rare birds like Giant Hornbill can also be sighted here. Sal , teak , chir pine , checkrashi and Pani-sas are common trees found in the area.

Kolompe Rocky Mountain: On the road to Namchi from Sumbuk, a sacred ‘Singha Devi Dham’ is located just below Swami Shyamdas Kuti. The interesting features of the place is that on the right hand side of the Dham seeps “Shilajit” ( valuable ayurvedic medicine) from steep rocky mountain. The area is also rich in flora, fauna and wild animals. It is also one of the viewpoints which overlokks parts of both Sikkim and Bengal.

Phool Dhara: Phool Dhara, meaning hills of flower, it is located at the hill top of Sumbuk village (2500mtr). The area is enriched with rhododendrons, wild orchids and other many flowering plants. The road to top is kachha and steep. On top of Phool Dhara there is a Lake ( Tamley Pokhri ) with several open earmarked spaces for bird watching.

All in all Kitam – Sumbuk – Phoo Dhara is a birder’s paradise with special emphasis on Phool Dhara for wonderful songs and calls for heavenly birds like Scarlet minivet, Rufous sibia to name a few.

Accommodation & Conveyance:

Kitam : Best option would be Thapa Homestay , Contact Mr. Sunil Thapa +91-9733104825. Charges Rs 750 per day per head inclusive of food. Mr. Thapa owns a Santro in which he picked us from Melli. He took us to the Kitam Sanctuary and dropped at a junction point ( near Manpur, the place has a bifurcation from the main jorethang Road from to Kitam).Car charges Rs 1000.

You can also contact Mr K.B Pradhan - +91-9593381999 for Hotel Green Valley ( Kitam Bazar, no idea of tariff)
Or Mr. K.N. Pradhan - +91-9832427887, khusnkitam@gmail.com

Recently some more homestay & lodge has come up in the area like Esha Lodge, Hotel Way side Inn (Kitam Bazar, +91-9474833553)

Sumbuk : Prahlad Homestay (Charges Rs 600 per day per head inclusive of food) , contact Mr. Prahlad Rai - +91-9733106646 or Mr. P Giri - +91-9733289566.
Mr. Rai owns a Alto in which he dropped us at NJP after almost full day roam to Phool Dhara ( upper Sumbuk/ Mungram village ) & Tarey Bhir ( Sadam). He picked us from the junction point where we left Mr Thapa’s Car and guided us for a sight-seeing in the evening. He charged Rs 3000 for the car from 4 of us.

Shall share few snaps in next post.
