X visa, registration

Hi everyone,
I'm staying in India with a one-year X visa. I tried to register with the FRRO within 14 days but was basically told to go away. I will have been here 180 soon and theoretically should leave India to get an exit and reentry stamp. In reality do I really need to do this? My parents are residents here with all the paperwork, hence I have an X visa.

Should I head to Nepal for a few days or can I continue to stay here until my visa runs out in June?

Thanks for any advice..
Oli

You need to register according to the blurb I read when I got my 5 year X visa if your first visit on this visa is for more than 6 months. My visit was for 3 weeks so I did not register. You only need to register once and not for any subsequent visits.

Here is some blurb from HCILondon web site

Who are required to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO)?

All foreign nationals holding visas valid for more than six months are required to register with the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Officer) within 14 days of arrival if they intend to stay for more than 6 months at any time after issue of visa. Pakistani and Afghan passport holder can contact the visa section at the High Commission of India, London for guidance on registration.

It may be noted that failure to register within the stipulated time as mentioned above, is a contravention of the prescribed rule and would invite appropriate punitive action.

What is the registration requirement for foreign nationals of Indian Origin?

Persons of Indian origin holding 5 years multiple entry visa are required to register with FRRO within 14 days of first arrival, only if they intend to stay continuously for more than 6 months. Registration is required during their first visit after the visa is issued. Children below the age of 16 are exempted from the requirement of registration.
