| Hello folks, I am currently working for a R&D department, and I would have the opportunity to join a local university to be doing a PhD at the same time. I have an employment visa right now. How can I go about to make this happen? Is there a way to have both an employment and student visa? Or can I get a student visa and a work permit? Or is there a way to request a special permission from the central government? I really want to take that opportunity! Please help!!! |

| You can only hold one visa at the same time, in my view if you already have an employment visa and are working on that employment visa, any studying you do as well as that would be in your own time, which is surely yours to fill as you wish?

| Humble servant of the self | Hi Mlaverd As far as I know, you will have to change your visa status from work to student. You can work on a student visa but not vice versa. I remember news sometime back where it was stated that the diplomats have to change their diplomatic visa to student visa if they have to do PhD etc.Ofcourse, I am not sure and maybe somebody well informed will post a message or the best will be to get in touch with the officials concerned.

| Working on a student visa is allowed??? Ok, that's surprising. I thought I would've at least to apply for some work permit. I've tried to google about this, but nothing conclusive came up. I guess I have no better solution than doing another full-day "pilgrimage" to the FRO Quote:

| For information about student visas go to the website of the Indian Government's Department of Education. It explains the regulations for foreign student visas fairly well. Also, you could ask our fellow IMer, Edwardseco. For some reason I think he knows the answer to this one. You can't study in India (not for a degree, anyway) without a student visa. Technically, you're not even supposed to enroll in a yoga school (!!) without one, but I don't think they check yoga schools. Colleges and universities are another matter. I doubt if a student visa allows you to work. |
