when to apply for a new visa

i am in india now on a six month tourist visa which is good for another three months. now i want a ten year visa from america, and i am thinking instead of going there i should mail my passport to new york and apply that way. but i dont know what is the proper time to do that-do i have to wait until the current visa is a certain number of days to expiration?

i recd my ten year from the consulate in san francisco fairly rapidly, in about ten working days.

clever idea -dont know if id trust the scheme. you do have to list the contents of the pkg.

same predicament

i am in the same predicament- i have a 6 month tourist visa and am in india presently. i have 5 months left (departure 4/16/05) and i want to get a 10 year visa (i am american). does anyone know the protocol regarding this. i would not want to send my passport to america. first of all it would take forever. second of all- you should always have your passport with you! is it possible to go to nepal, bangkok, elsewhere and apply there for it? or can one get it while still in india- perhaps in delhi?

any guidance on this would be much appreciated

i got only a sixmonth visa from bangkok-they told me there that only thai citizens would get anything better.

it seems to me that if you want to stay in india there should be a way of getting a new visa while you are here-but that would make sense, wouldnt it?

now i am seeing a lawyer about how to immigrate...

From what I know, if you have tourist visa, you have to live the country and apply for new one from outside. Only entry and working type of visa can be prolong without leaving country.
At least, that is the way it works from here.
