India does not encourage immigration. If you are not PIO or OCI then you will have to leave the country every 180 days.

That would depend on whether you are of Indian origin or not.

Assuming not...

Student visa: will allow you to study at a government-approved institution.

Employment Visa: get a job, apply for an employment visa and you can live in India, obviously, to do that job. Valid for that company only.

Other (X, PIO, etc): available if you marry an Indian citizen

If you've been looking at the visa sites and wondering why there are no visas for simply living here --- its because there aren't any. You can't just live here.

Sorry, but India doesn't want migrants.

See my post No. 3 in the following thread, responding to one of your other questions. If you mean "move" as in "immigrate," forget about it.

Assuming you're an American citizen you're eligible for a 10-year tourist visa, a luxury other countries do not have. You're still stuck with the issue of having to leave the country every 180 days, and of course you couldn't work, but other than that...

To live permanently in India? You would first need a tourist visa to get you into the country.

Then, after you marry an Indian, you can convert it to an Entry (X) visa. After at least one year, get back to us for details of getting PIO status, which will allow you to remain in India for at fifteen years.

Failing that, research what job skills are lacking in India (and frankly there are very few), go to university and study a subject in that area, spend many years gaining specialst knowledge, then apply for a job, which which you can obtain an employment visa. Oh, if you leave that particular job, your visa is invalidated and you have to leave India.

As a last resort, apply for a ten year tourist visa, and pull off the perfect bank job. Of course, you'll still have to leave India every 180 days, but after spending six months in India, I'm sure you'll be very glad to get away from all the chaos for a while.

Now many have asked but some have achieved. How about that god/goddes person that stuck around for years (BBC) & may still be there? Maybe, the OP has enough spiritual bent as opposed to just being pissed off at bosses, an ex, etc..

Something tells me not. The question about whether homes have electricity and the types of outlets does not strike me as high on the list of questions a "Tenzin Palmo"-type individual would ask (and how DOES Tenzin Palmo get to stay, anyway?)

I'm sorry you think I'm hurtful and rude, but if you are this thin-skinned, you are in for a very rough time in India. Regardless of what you think, my advice to you was perfectly sound (and was also consistent with what others, who are apparently not "hurtful" and "rude" in your view, told you), and if you would actually consider it rationally instead of getting into a snit, you might have a better chance for a successful experience because you won't be going over there with completely unrealistic expectations.

India is a big step for a first overseas trip -- I'm not sure I could have handled it. Dzibead is fair saying that it's not for the thin-skinned.

For a helpful and realistic view on westerners living in India, and particularly Delhi, here's a reading assignment:

City of Djinns, by William Dalrymple
More general on India:
Age of Kali, by William Dalrymple

You have two choices: apply either for a tourist visa, but then, as you already know, you would need to exit every half year. Better idea may be to apply for a student visa. It seems that you are interested in Buddhism, so you can contact one of the recognized teaching institutions in Mcleodganj (Upper Dharamshala) and get registered there. This way you can stay for a year at a time and it is extendable for the duration of your studies. One such place is the "Tibetan Library of Works and Archives", situated half way between Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. Here are the contact details:
Central Tibetan Secretariat
Gangchen Kyishong
Dharamsala 176 215

Tel: 91-1892-22467
email: ltwa@ndf.vsnl.net.in

sunspirit: If you are leaving the country for the first time; and you are under the age of 18 at the time of application. You might just have a problem. It is rare, but be careful.

The CGINY might ask for extra documentation sucn as funds during your stay and/or guardian's permission.

As others have mentioned, get a 10-year tourist visa and do some practice runs to nearby countries in the caribbean to get a feel of temperature, amenities and a bit of roughness.

Sunspirit, are you at all interested in going to college? If so you could possibly study here or get in a program that would allow you to visit and do some type of research as part of your undergrad program.

Everyone has pretty much covered the visa options but maybe you could tell us a little more about why you want to move to India and what type of work/study you are interested in.

april...- no actually colleges do not offer the major I would like to persue, so that is why I started to plan this trip. I wish to learn the healing arts. but beyound reki. I do not forsee any oppertunities for that here in america. so that is why I wanted to move to india, it would have been tibet if things you know weren't happening there. I am not going there for the adventure of a life time I am going there for myself, for the better good that america doesn't offer.
