What's allowed with a tourist visum?

I'm looking for information about what exacly you are allowed to do when you are in India on a tourist visum.

I ask this, because I plan to "work" on some opensource projects for some time on my next trip. I will NOT be employed, will not receive any salary and I will not sell anything. It's more like self education than working.

This should surely be no problem, isn't it?

dani would be interested to know what open-source projects u would be working on when here? Doing work in silicon valley (read Bangalore) or Pune or where? I know location is irrelevant but if passing pune would invite u to a chai/beer as well as the local LUG chapter here www.plug.org.in I know the site hasn't been updated for a month hence shifting servers this week or next week.

@GoanCanuck: thanks for the encouragement

@jivan: well, I'm not sure anymore what I'll going to do.
This was the plan: first I wanted to travel for some time (maybe 2 months) in the north, and check if my Hindi is any good.
Then I would meet up with a pal from university (who arrives through central Asia) and travel south to Ernakulam, where we can use an appartement of friends. There we would hack for some months. I planned to work mainly on some kde apps, as a means to learn c++ and qt (some kfile extensions, a kio_slave, digikam plugins...). Then I also plan to implement some tablet support for kde (handwriting recognition would be nice)

But now my partner has got an unexpected job offer, so he'll probably not be able to join me. I don't know if I wanna do this alone. Maybe I’ll just look for an internship job in Bangalore (a friend has an IT company there) or Hyderabad (would be better than B'lore to practice Hindi a bit)...

I'll certainly take up your offer for a chai/beer when I pass through Pune

An internship, being formal, might give more visa problems, but if you can get an offer and a business visa arranged by your employers everything should be fine.

If you plan to travel, arrange it with them that the period they are "employing" you covers the travelling time too.

I've never heard anyone speak of a visum: it strikes me as a beautiful piece of pedantry. If you are that careful with language, I bet your coding is great!

Any employment related visa has to be applied for when you are in your home country not when you are in India. Getting an employment visa can take anywhere from 3 months to 12 months.

hehe, I do that intentionally. My problem is that I took some latin classes in my early college years, so I know that 'visa' is the plural form of 'visum'. Now I can't say 'visa' anymore if I talk about one single 'visum', it just feels so plain wrong
(besides in german it's called a 'visum' anyway..)

Somehow I just knew it would not be that easy
My problem is, I don't know what I want to do. If I do want an internship I'd have to apply immediately

Except that visa is a verb not a noun!

English usage of the word Visa comes from Latin videre "to see". Of course the sense here is something which has been "seen" by an official and marked or stamped as such.

The word Visa is short for the Latin “carta visa”, literally, "the document has been seen".

"Visa" is generally used as a noun (singular). In rare cases it can also be used as a noun (proper) and a lexical verb (in base form).

Maybe you weren't paying attention in the latin classes you took in your early college years!
