want to study in india?

I am an American who studied as a matriculated student in India. Due to this I had to apply for a student visa. Applying for a student visa for India (from USA) is a real headache and very difficult. If anyone is doing this please let me know, I will give you advice. Student visas to india are only valid for one year not depending on the length of your program. I suggest though, if you go to India for study abroad through an american college NOT TO APPLY FOR A STUDENT VISA, but a tourist visa. Most colleges will advise this, most wont. I know this because before I went to India on my own, I was accepted into several study abroad programs (but did not due to knowing the real finances in India) advised to get student visas and most were not accepted due to the heavy restrictions on student visas.

why you want to study in India while USA has best facility for study?
May be one reason is that study in India is very cheap than states? I have visited your site and may be another reason is your affection towards iindia?

If you need my help, contact me at asteroid@indiatimes.com

help!

Hi

There is a school I want to attend in India due to the uniqueness of it.

I have applied but due to changes in the course structure, they have been slow in replying. Only by snail mail at that. I have tried ringing and faxing with little luck. The bottom line is I have already bought my plane ticket and leave next month. I can't get the student visa (I presume) due to not having any documents saying that I have been accepted into the new course.

My concern is that to apply for a tourist visa I need to show that I have an onward ticket, mine is one way.
Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Mission
I've never been asked for an onward ticket on any of my trips
I only buy one way tickets to leave my return open

So you should have no worries on that account

Preparing to go study in India, Visa question.

Namaste Everyone!
I have been reading as much as I could so far from this site.
I am from Spain, planning to go to India in January to study Classical Hindustani music from a private teacher/pandit in Jaipur (Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt).
I have no idea of how long I will be staying, (I don't think I can learn such serious music in just a year or six months, so I know I want to get the longest visa I can, the teacher is private so I don't know how the student visa is gonna work out.
I thought maybe finding a school to learn hindi, that could make the whole thing more 'official'!?
Any advise!
Sukriya!

transfer from tourist visa to student visa

I am planning to travel to India on a tourist visa in order to find a decent yoga / sanskrit / buddhism / or tantra program. I want to have the opportunity to visit the facility prior to making a commitment to it. Have folks had much experience in making this switch. 'Officially' from what I read on Indian Embassy websites, this is not possible, but what is the case 'unofficially'? If I find a place I like and can provide documentation attesting to the school, the program, a letter from the school authorities, what are my chances of switching the visa from a tourist to a student?

Thanks for your help!
Namaste

I think it really depends on the Consulate you are dealing with. For example the Indian Embassy/Consulate here in Rome is a nightmare - feels like the ticket window at CST...It is in the basement, there is a room for "Indians" and another room for "non-Indians" - who designed it - Lord Curzon. In addition they will negate visas at the drop of a hat, I wanted a 6 month multiple entry and they told me no way, especially since I had just come back 2 months earlier. However at the consulate in Houston they will basically issue whatever visa you want the same day and even have pens and glue to fix up your visa applications...

The Italian system works like this too, everything depends on which consulate you go to and who is behind the glass window...

Hmm,

I have 2 friends here in Himachal Pradesh, they both have 5 year visa's (both from USA). USA is the easiest country caus eyou can get the big visa's. SO I think some people have been misinformed.

Plus student visa's are easy to have in India (been here some time now) and a lot of friends " study" buddism here, they get a letter from the school or whatever, and get there visa easely.

Don't really see why you guys have so much troubles......

If you are looking for a good study in India program there is a program called IISAC Semester/Year in India. It is through Pondicherry University, although there is also something at Raijiri(?) College in Kerala. I know from looking for a program that if you want to do a study abroad and remain a student at your own university you can start looking at some very expensive programs. This program costs 5,250 USD per semester but this includes tuition, room and board and a tour of South India. I will be doing the program for an entire year. So far all of the people have been excellent to work with, good advice, prompt replies to questions, all that sort of thing. Cheers!
