We visited India last year and had the usual 3 month tourist visa. Am I right in thinking we can't renew it amd will have to go through the whole application process again?

Yes.
Once it is finished it is finsihed But the 'usual' tourist visa if you are both born in, resident in and Citizen of UK, without forbears from places such as Pakistan and Sri Lanka, is six months
