That will depend entirely on what sort of visa it is.

If it is a Tourist visa, then yes, you can stay no longer than six months at a time --- even for those lucky Americans that can get a ten-year visa.

If it is an X Entry visa then you can stay longer, subject to requirements to register etc.... .... ....

What is the reason for the visa form question "Name of father/husband"? A hundred years ago, the father question might have increased the precison in identifying a person, but with social security numbers it looks rather funny. In Sweden, we've had unique numbers since 1947. And husband? Why not wife? What about registered partnerships?

Indeed a great thread, wish I had of found it a couple of weeks back when I was fumbling around my Indian visa dilemma.

My question is perhaps a little cheeky as it involves a Nepalese visa. I was wondering if anyone knows if I can get a visa for Nepal at the airport in Kathmandu as I fly from Delhi or will I have to arrange whilst in India

Thanks!

Is it possible, as I was told by a travel agency, that the travel agency could get me one prior to leaving the USA?

At the San Francisco, Ca, USA office you can get a visa same day in person.

However:

-You need to arrive in the morning (forget the cut off time) to drop off the application and then pick up your passport in the afternoon, so it ends up taking most of the work day (took me 10am till 330pm IIRC).

-They *always* run out of applications at the office so bring your own!

-They claim that they only accept a limited number of applications per day but I have no idea what the limit is or if they ever meet it.

I've been living in india for 10 months on a work visa (X-Visa to be precise). I plan on heading to nepal in october once it runs out for a few weeks and want to return to india for a bit of travelling. Can I get a tourist visa when I re-enter india? Whats the procedure, should I apply for it before I leave or when I get to nepal? Or would it be easier to extend my x-visa?

Cheers in advance

An X-visa can be extended --- or, rather, renewed, in India.

A tourist visa cannot except in cases of (eg medical) emergency.

Irish Dan... If your work is "continuing" you could just renew your visa, otherwise you could get a new tourist visa in Nepal before returning to India.

Sorry... "X" is an Entry visa, usually valid for longer than a tourist visa and given to eg spouses of Indian citizens, or spouses of those on business visas.

A Tourist Visa is not renewable anywhere.

Nor can you get a new one in India. You must leave the country, but not necessaril all the way back to your home country.

Which is why long-term India travellers head for eg Shri Lanka, Nepal, etc etc.

Shouldn't all passport holders have visas? At what age must a child have his or her own passport?

I'm still trying to find out the answer to this, though most likely from Birth.

From the (UK) passport office website......

Quote:
In the past babies and children could be included on a parent or guardian’s passport. The law has now changed and babies and children up to 16 who are not already on a parent’s or guardian's passport must have their own child passport if they are going to travel abroad.
