visa renewal while in india
we're in india now with a touristvisa for 6 months. we decided to stay longer to do voluntarywork so we need a new visa for another six months..
- if we do it in nepal, do we necessarely go to kathmandu or are there other possibilities - what's the price of the new visa? - what's requested to obtain the new visa? (returnticket?) - is it possible to get a new one when the first visa is still valid for, let s say another 6 weeks? - do you need to stay out of india for a certain amount of time? thank you very much, namaste |

Correct me if I'm wrong but a tourist visa is not extendable. It says so on the visa itself. I believe you can only get it extended for up to 15 days at the Consulate in New Delhi, and only if you produce a ticket out of the country. In your case, leaving the country and coming back is your only option.
It really depends on which part of India you're currently based. If you're in Calcutta you can easily grab a ticket out to Bangkok, and fit in a short vacation as well =) It's even cheaper than heading to Bangladesh (by flight, I mean). Also, I have tried to obtain a Indian visa in Bangladesh. It was an unnecessarily complicated process. Kathmandu would be your best option, I reckon. Also, some embassies seem only willing to extend your visa AFTER it has expired, instead of adding on to it, so bear that in mind (this was in Bangladesh, tho it might be different elsewhere). |

You are right: a tourist visa is neither extendable nore renewable.
I have not had difficulties getting a new visa while the new one is valid (they will cancel the old one), but that was in London. They may be more fussy in the "visa run" consulates.
